Business Update: Card Payment Surcharges End from 1 October

From today, 1 October 2026, businesses across Australia can no longer apply surcharges to customers paying with Visa, Mastercard, eftpos and American Express cards. This change also covers debit and prepaid cards.

For local businesses, this means reviewing how card processing costs are managed and ensuring payment systems and pricing information are up to date.

What does this mean for your business?

🔹No separate card surcharges: Customers can no longer be charged an additional fee for paying with the covered cards.
🔹Review your pricing: Businesses may need to consider how card processing costs are reflected in their overall pricing.
🔹Check with your payment provider: Confirm your EFTPOS terminals and payment systems are updated to meet the new requirements.

Weekend and public holiday surcharges, along with booking fees and other non-card-related charges, are not covered by this change.

OCCI encourages local businesses to familiarise themselves with the new requirements and seek advice from their payment provider where needed.

The Onslow Chamber of Commerce & Industry (OCCI) is excited to open applications for our next 𝗛𝘂𝗯 𝗖𝗼𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 - a role at the heart of supporting local business, community connection, and member services.

This position has become available as our dedicated Hub Coordinator, 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗮 𝗪𝗲𝗻𝘇𝗲𝗹, is relocating back to her hometown of Dongara. We are incredibly grateful for everything Corrina has brought to OCCI over the past 12 months - her hard work, her passion for our members, and her commitment to strengthening our business community.
