💳 A welcome reprieve for small business!

Some good news for Australian businesses managing tight cash flow.

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has delayed its planned ban on credit card payments for tax bills until 30 June 2027, following concerns raised by the small business community.

Originally scheduled to take effect from December, the change would have removed a payment option that many businesses rely on to manage cash flow and meet their tax obligations.

The Federal Government has now stepped in with temporary funding, giving businesses more time to adjust while the ATO consults on alternative payment arrangements.

For regional small businesses, where managing cash flow can be an ongoing challenge, that extra breathing room is welcome.

It's a reprieve, not a reversal, but it does provide some certainty while longer-term options are explored.

Adjusting to Payday Super may take a little time - and the ATO has acknowledged that.

For the 2026–27 financial year, the ATO says employers who are genuinely trying to meet their Payday Super obligations won’t be the focus of its compliance activities.

That doesn’t mean the rules don’t apply. If something goes wrong - such as a rejected contribution, incorrect employee details or a missed payment - the important thing is to identify it, fix it as soon as possible and keep a record of what happened.

Think of this first year as an opportunity to get your systems and processes right.

🌱 Climate reporting may sound like an issue for big business, but its impact is increasingly reaching SMEs too.

ASIC says small and medium businesses may be asked to provide climate-related information when they form part of the value chain of larger organisations subject to mandatory sustainability reporting. This could include information used to understand greenhouse gas emissions and energy use.

It can also be relevant when tendering for government work. Environmental sustainability and climate impacts are considerations within Australian Government procurement, and some procurements have specific environmental sustainability requirements.

That’s where YBM’s Carbon Accounting service can help.

YBM can work with SMEs to measure their Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, compile emissions data and establish more robust carbon reporting. Having credible information ready can put your business in a better position to respond when a tender or larger customer asks about your environmental performance.

Due to significant interest - this program is now closed!
🌾 Up to $20,000 towards better on-farm connectivity
The On Farm Connectivity Program Round 3 is now open, helping eligible primary producers access digital technology that can improve productivity, connectivity and safety on-farm.

Eligible primary producers can access a rebate covering up to 50% of eligible equipment costs, to a maximum of $20,000 (excluding GST). Equipment can include connectivity solutions, environmental monitoring, farm management technology and remote automation and control equipment.

To be eligible, primary producers need to meet requirements including having an ABN registered for at least 12 months and average annual gross income between $40,000 and $4 million over the specified three financial years. Importantly, producers don't apply directly - the rebate is accessed through an Approved Supplier.

📅 Applications close 5pm AEDT, 15 October 2026, or potentially earlier if available funding is fully allocated, so it’s worth looking into sooner rather than later.

Check the eligibility requirements and program details through the link.

Reminder for businesses: card surcharge changes start today

From today (1 October 2026), businesses can no longer add a surcharge when customers pay using Visa, Mastercard, American Express or eftpos prepaid, debit or credit cards, following the introduction of new ‘no surcharge’ rules by the card networks.

If your business previously passed card processing costs on to customers, it's time now
to make sure you have:

✅ Removed card surcharge notices from signage, menus, websites and apps
✅ ️Disabled surcharges on payment terminals and online payment systems
✅ Reviewed your pricing to account for card processing costs
✅ Spoken with your payment provider if you're unsure how the changes apply

Businesses will still pay card processing fees – they simply can’t pass them on as a separate card surcharge for these payment types. Those costs can instead be factored into overall pricing.
