The Grape Pirates Hansen Vineyard is pruned & tied down ready for another growing season.

Buds are just starting to swell up in the Merlot. Bud burst isn’t far away!

Fun fact: Grape Pirates took over managing this beautiful vineyard in the Winter of 2023. Although, this is Bex’s 7th year pruning this site.

In our 2025 Grape Pirates Pinot Noir we have 3 Pinot Noir Clones; MV6, 777, 667. We Carbonic Macerated around 10% of the MV6 Pinot Noir clone.

HAPPY INTERNATIONAL PINOT NOIR DAY!!!
A perfect day to officially announce our new 2025 Grape Pirates Pinot Noir.

Our 2025 vintage is made up of three Pinot Noir clones: 667, 777, MV6. We Carbonic Macerated 10% while fermenting the rest in open fermenters. Keeping the clones seperate.
10 months in a beautiful Pierre Marconnet re-coopered French oak Barrel and mature oak barrels. Racked and settled in tank for a further 6 months. No filtering, no fining just careful focused minimal intervention w**emaking.

Now this is our kinda Pinot!
Aromatics of cherry, raspberry and sweet spice leap out of the glass from the Carbonic Maceration. Palette; juicy and textured, red fruits follow through accompanied with All spice. Finishing with silky tannins and a good touch of acidity.

Pinot Noir is one of my (Bex) absolute favourite varieties. A variety I’ve chased around the world to learn.

VINTAGE 2026 ~ officially ended for Grape Pirates on Friday, with Pirate Aaron putting our Merlot to barrel.

We hand-picked our Merlot on the 3rd of April from the little block we manage at 997 metres altitude. The quality of the grapes was epic, and we were super excited about it. It was the best harvest we’ve had from the little site since taking over management in 2023 and giving it a new lease of life.

At the w**ery, we dropped the grapes straight into a tank for our favourite w**emaking technique: carbonic maceration. We left them to macerate for four weeks, then transferred them to a fermenter at 4° Bé for a damn good soak for a further three and a half weeks! After pressing this past week, the w**e was racked to older French oak barrels for malolactic fermentation and maturation.

This Merlot is destined for our 2026 Merlot Malbec blend, which will be ready for bottling around the start of 2028.
