In the Centre, we balance consulting and training. We've been developing interactive Shiny apps to demonstrate important statistical ideas. Check this one out, on the connection between confidence intervals and P-values.

At the end of this month we are running our 2-day workshop "Introduction to R and Reproducible Research".

This is delivered face to face, by two expert users of R, both with considerable experience as statisticians and data scientists. You will learn efficiently and effectively from people who know (deeply) what they are talking about, and can communicate it well.

Come join us: Three weeks to go before Mixed models in R course starts online - fee paying.
Feedback on the course:
o Great friendly, chatty, caring environment created by Graham and Cam. Well done.
o Very useful. I work in linguistics, where mixed models have basically become the norm, but I always used to find them intimidating. I feel that I can begin to use them now.
o These were enormously useful to have at the same time. Particularly for running the code if we liked simultaneously. It was also really great when there were interpretations of the models/residuals etc.
o The exercises matched what was taught and helped consolidate learning.

Amelia Lester, Age "Good Weekend", 23 July 2022:

"What's more, walking for 15 minutes daily reduces the chance of death by 22 per cent, which is the sort of stat that always confuses me because isn't everyone's risk of death 100 per cent?"

Exactly! Yes, Amelia. You have understood something many researchers do not. Risks and rates are not the same thing. As Keynes said: "In the long run, we are all dead." We may talk meaningfully about the 5-year risk of death, etc., but it's best to use rates for death and similar events.

During the recent floods in NSW, the NSW premier said it was a "1 in 1,000 year" event. Barnaby Joyce upped the ante to "1 in 3,500 years". I am not sure where they are getting these estimates; I saw a Bureau of Meteorology person say : "Not from us".

I wrote a letter to The Age about it:
