🥊 For too long, child support has been viewed as a battle between parents.

At Child Support Consultants, we don’t see this as Mum versus Dad.

We see it as children deserving the financial support they’re entitled to from both parents & an outdated system that is letting families down.

Findings by the Commonwealth Ombudsman highlighted significant shortcomings within the child support system, identifying loopholes and administrative failures that have left many families disadvantaged, which led to the Federal Government’s recent budget commitment to improving the system acknowledges what many parents have known for years: the system is flawed with so many loopholes and inconsistencies and it is causing harm to Australian children.

Every week we speak to mothers and fathers who are exhausted, frustrated and overwhelmed. Parents who have spent years trying to navigate a complex system while simply wanting what is fair for their children and their voices heard.

The struggle is real.
The paperwork and phone calls are overwhelming (and often triggering).
The processes are confusing.
The loopholes can be exploited.
The outcomes can feel impossible to challenge and the Agency is just not hearing you.

That’s where we come in.

We stand beside parents in their corner, not to “win” against the other parent, but to help ensure children receive the financial support they deserve, and that parents are treated fairly throughout the process while preserving, as much as possible, an amicable co-parenting relationship and most importantly promoting a ‘children first’ policy where all our support and representation is guided by what is best for the child.

Every parent deserves someone in their corner who understands the system, knows how to navigate it, and will fight for what is right. Particularly those who are more vulnerable or at risk of being taken advantage of by an ‘uneven playing field’.

Addressing systems abuse in the Child Support Scheme

Services Australia has released the budget details on 12 May 2026:

“Reforms to the Child Support Scheme will make Australia’s child support systems safer and fairer. They target points of weaponisation, financial abuse, and non-compliance to close loopholes that allow perpetrators of family and domestic violence to weaponise child support”.

See link in our bio for the DSS budge and Services Australia’s information regarding this reform.

This Mother’s Day, I’m reflecting on the incredible example my mum set for me from the very beginning ❤️

This photo captures something that became a lifelong pattern, me proudly standing beside my mum in matching outfits at the preschool she built, where she was the director.

But what I didn’t fully understand as a child was that I wasn’t just standing next to my mum… I was standing next to a woman brave enough to build something of her own from the ground up while still raising 4 children of her own.

Before opening her preschool, my mum spent years as a primary school teacher and completed university training because she genuinely loved teaching and working with children. But while she loved the children, she didn’t love the limitations, attitudes and system surrounding education at the time. So she took a risk, stepping away from the security of the department to create something aligned with her own values, vision and way of supporting children and families, her way!

Looking back now, I realise just how much that shaped me.

Like my mum, I also chose to step away from “the system” and build something myself, creating a business with purpose, compassion and the freedom to help families in a way that truly reflects who I am and what I believe in, my way!

Although our industries are different, the heart behind our work has always been the same: 100% child focused, supporting children and making a meaningful difference in the lives of families.

What makes this story even more special is seeing the next generation continue that legacy. My daughter, Carissa, is now a preschool teacher, following in the footsteps of her grandmother.

This weekend we celebrate the mums, grandmothers and women who nurture, lead, take risks and quietly inspire future generations every single day 🌺

Happy Mother’s Day to all the amazing mums out there 💜

Tethered for 18 years. It’s the exhausting race to the bottom.

This was a quote from a parent I spoke to today and it really struck me as the perfect (yet quite sad) summary of what many separated parents, both mums and dads are feeling when caught up in a problematic system.

Two parents, tied to the same rope.
One moves ahead, the other catches up.

Then the system shifts - another reassessment, another change, and suddenly you’re both scrambling again.

It’s not stability.
It’s not clarity.
It’s constant recalculation.

For many parents, child support isn’t a straight path, it’s a moving target.

Assessments change. Circumstances change.
And instead of moving forward, you’re pulled back into the same cycle… over and over again.

Eighteen years of being financially and emotionally tethered, while trying to keep your footing on unstable ground.

This isn’t about “winning” or “losing.”
It’s about a system that often keeps both parents stuck in a loop, instead of supporting real stability for families.

That’s where we come in.

At Child Support Consultants, we help you make sense of the system, provide tangible options, challenge unfair assessments, and create a clearer path forward.

Because you shouldn’t have to navigate this alone.

Restoring fairness, case after case. What we do 👊

A mother of three recently came to us feeling disheartened after an unsuccessful Change of Assessment (COA) process, despite having previously been assisted by a lawyer. The outcome had left her feeling let down by the system, with no adjustment made to the father’s reported income which resulted in her being liable to pay child support based on a fictitious assessment.

Seeking clarity and fairness, she engaged our Peace of Mind Package for support with lodging an objection to this decision.

Our Approach & Outcome:

Casey carefully reviewed the matter and prepared a detailed objection under Reason 8A. As a result, the father’s income was reassessed from around $28,000 to approximately $93,000 per annum, a significant and justified adjustment based on his true financial position.

What this meant for our client:

Although she remains the paying parent (due to her higher income and 50/50 care arrangement), the assessment is now far more balanced.

Her annual child support liability reduced from over $13,000 to just over $5,000
Her outstanding child support debt decreased by $4,500

Most importantly, she now feels confident that the assessment reflects a fair alignment of both parents’ ability to support their children.

A great outcome and a reminder that the right strategy can make all the difference.

If you feel your assessment doesn’t reflect your situation, you need a subject matter expert on your side!

Not happy with a Child Support decision, but unsure if you have the time, energy, or confidence to take it to the Tribunal?

You’re not alone, and you don’t have to do it on your own.

From January 2025 to January 2026, our office has 38 client cases on file to provide representation through ART hearing processes.

At Child Support Consultants, our Visionary Package is dedicated to representing clients through the ART (Administrative Review Tribunal) process, ensuring your voice is heard while ensuring your case is handled with precision and expertise.

We support you every step of the way:

Guidance and representation during phone conferences and directions hearings
Preparation and timely submission of all documentation
Strong written submissions, clearly applying relevant legislation
Skilled verbal advocacy during substantive hearings

ART matters are complex and often overwhelming, particularly if you have been burnt by previous Child Support processes, but that’s where we step in. Our role is to ensure your position is clearly articulated in the way you want to be heard, legislatively grounded and professionally presented.

Our expertise in child support representation is why not only clients trust us, but family law firms around Australia also engage our services when it matters most.

If you’re questioning a decision, don’t let uncertainty hold you back from pursuing the right outcome.

Is your military pension that was subject to the 2020 Douglas Decision being used as income in your Child Support assessment?

28/03/2026

“Child support covers that”.
Does it?

2026 costs….2005 formula 🤷‍♀️

25/03/2026

📞 You call and get one answer, then call again and get a completely different one
🤷‍♀️ It’s widely known that “it depends on who you get” ⚖️ Decision makers reviewing similar situations can come to wildly different outcomes

All while supposedly following the same legislation, process, and policy.

So, what’s going on?

There is a high level of discretionary decision-making, and for parents trying to navigate the system, that can feel unpredictable and intimidating and end up just giving up because ‘it’s just not worth it’.

That’s why it’s so important to trust your inner voice when something doesn’t feel right and push back.

In Jess’s video, she shares a case where a client was encouraged by a decision maker to withdraw her application because “there would be no change.”

But that’s just ONE opinion and would have turned out to be extremely costly had they followed that advice.

Here’s what you need to know:
If you withdraw your application:
* There is NO formal decision made* You have NO objection rights* You have NO ability to appeal to the ART
Child Support holds NO responsibility, it was YOUR choice to withdraw

And if you reapply later?
It only counts from the new application date, meaning lost time

If you believe something isn’t right, proceed
Get a formal decision
Protect your right to object and appeal

Understanding your rights is critical in a system where inconsistency is common.

If you’re dealing with this kind of situation, you’re not alone, and you don’t have to navigate it by yourself.
