This week at Nepean Business Network, we heard from Sarah Bracken from Checker Bookkeeping, who shared some practical advice on keeping business finances accurate, organised and useful for decision-making.

With more than 20 years’ experience in finance and accounting, Sarah started Checker Bookkeeping around three years ago and now works with businesses across Penrith and beyond. Services include bank reconciliations, payroll, accounts payable and receivable, Xero setup and training, reporting, ATO assistance and much more.

Sarah also explained that bookkeeping support doesn’t have to replace doing it yourself. Checker Bookkeeping can provide a second pair of eyes, carry out month-end checks, help improve processes and automation, and make sure your accounts are properly reconciled and ready when needed.

A great practical presentation with plenty of useful tips for business owners. Thanks Sarah for sharing your knowledge with the NBN group!

A great presentation at this morning’s Nepean Business Network meeting from Lee Banister of Tresami Managed It Services, covering Small Business Technology, AI and Scams Awareness.

Lee gave us a practical look at how AI can help businesses work faster and smarter — not by replacing people, but by reducing repetitive admin and freeing staff up to focus on customers and higher-value tasks.

He also shared some great examples of where AI can assist with drafting emails and proposals, summarising meetings, preparing reports and procedures, and helping staff find information more efficiently.

With Scams Awareness Week coming up, the second part of Lee’s presentation was an important reminder of just how sophisticated scams are becoming. The simple message:

🛑 STOP – Slow down before giving away money, credentials or personal information.
✅ CHECK – Verify the person or organisation independently.
🔒 PROTECT – Act quickly if something doesn’t feel right.

Technology and security systems are important, but staff awareness can often be the final line of defence.

Thanks Lee and Tresami for an informative and very relevant presentation for businesses of all sizes.

💎 NBN On Site at York Jewellers 💎
This week's Nepean Business Network meeting took us on site to the impressive new York Jewellers store on Riley Street, Penrith.

The York Jewellers team gave us a tour of their new location and showcased the fantastic new fitout, including some of the quality workmanship from fellow NBN member Harry’s Flooring.
We were also joined by Doug Ely, who took part in a great Q&A session and shared some of the story behind York Jewellers and the family business.

Doug spoke about the awards York Jewellers has received for its work designing and creating fine jewellery, as well as one of his proudest moments in business – when his father handed over the reins of the family business to him.
It was a great opportunity to hear more about the history, craftsmanship and family values behind one of Penrith’s well-known local businesses, while getting a first-hand look at their fantastic new store.

A big thank you to Doug and the York Jewellers team for welcoming NBN this morning, and congratulations on the new location! 👏💍

A fantastic Nepean Business Network meeting this week, held in one of the newly renovated areas at The Australian Arms Hotel.

Our guest presenter was Christine Barnes from Classic Conveyancing Company, joined by her son Taylor, who is an active part of the Penrith and St Marys-based business.

Christine explained why clients trust Classic Conveyancing to guide them through one of the biggest financial decisions of their lives. With more than 49 years of combined experience, including Christine’s 42 years in the industry and more than 8,000 conveyancing transactions, the team has built its reputation around three key pillars:

✅ Clarity – speaking in plain English, not legal jargon
✅ Protection – identifying risks and issues before they become problems
✅ Exceptional Care – putting people first throughout the entire transaction

Christine discussed the importance of reviewing contracts carefully, identifying unusual conditions, managing disclosure obligations and ensuring settlements proceed as smoothly as possible. She also highlighted the unexpected costs and risks buyers may encounter, including strata levies, building inspections, by-laws, hidden obligations and conditions that favour the seller.

The presentation also included a helpful discussion about property covenants, including fencing requirements, developer restrictions and how covenant breaches may need to be disclosed when a property is sold.

While artificial intelligence will continue to change the conveyancing industry, Christine believes it will support rather than replace experienced conveyancers. Technology can improve digital signing, client updates and efficiency, but personalised advice, negotiation and professional judgement remain essential.

Classic Conveyancing is a PEXA Certified Member, certified with the Australian Institute of Conveyancers and has won the Local Business Awards more than six times.

Thank you, Christine and Taylor, for an informative and practical presentation.

This week at NBN we welcomed Ken Ferris from Riverlands Therapy, who gave members a fascinating insight into psychological testing.

Ken covered how assessments are used to better understand areas such as ADHD, ASD, depression, anxiety, stress, intelligence, working memory and learning needs. Members also had the opportunity to take part in a short activity, giving a practical example of how testing can reveal patterns in the way people respond and present themselves.

A big thank you to Ken for an informative and thought-provoking presentation.

This week at NBN, we heard from Matt Trad from QKM Kitchens, who shared some of the stunning cabinetry and joinery projects the team has completed over the past six months.

Matt walked us through recent kitchen and custom joinery projects in St Clair, Castle Hill, Mount Colah and Twin Creeks, highlighting how good design is about much more than appearance. From clever appliance integration and functional storage, through to stone benchtops, lighting, custom wardrobes, butler’s pantries, curved joinery and premium finishes, each project showed the importance of creating spaces that work beautifully for everyday family living.

Matt also shared some of the current trends in kitchen design, including curved finishes, slimline shaker doors, timber-look cabinetry, concealed work zones, LED wardrobe lighting and durable, low-maintenance materials.

QKM Kitchens deliver premium cabinetry and joinery solutions across both residential and commercial projects, with a strong focus on design excellence, manufacturing precision, functionality and long-term value.

A great presentation showcasing the craftsmanship, detail and practical thinking that goes into creating beautiful spaces for the home.
