The City of Canning invites Expressions of Interest from suitably qualified and experienced Noongar artists and creative practitioners for a series of public art commissions at Kent Street Weir.

As the gateway to the Canning River Regional Park, a new recreational precinct is being developed at Kent Street Weir with the vision of creating an inclusive community space. As part of this transformation, the City is commissioning a series of Noongar artworks to be integrated at prominent locations throughout the precinct.

This place holds deep cultural significance for the Whadjuk Noongar people, who traditionally camped along its shores and relied on the river as a vital source of food, water, and natural materials. It is also recognised for its rich cultural, environmental, and historical values. The artworks will contribute to storytelling and the preservation of Noongar culture and traditions, enhancing the precinct’s sense of place and strengthening community connection to Country.

Artists of all levels of experience are encouraged to express their interest. From the expression of interest received, several artists will be selected to develop concept designs for a fee. The expression of interest phase (this phase) is unpaid.

The Expression of Interest period will close at 5PM 8 December 2025.

Applicants should submit their response prior to this deadline.

The Shire of East Pilbara is developing an Arts and Culture Strategy, and we would love your input in shaping the vision for arts and culture in the Shire.

The Arts and Cultural Strategy will be shaped by the needs and aspirations of the community, ensuring it reflects the diverse voices and identities that make up the East Pilbara.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be visiting the region to work closely with a broad range of groups across the Shire including local artists and creatives, cultural organisations, community groups, businesses, government agencies, and residents.

During this time, a community survey is open to anyone interested in contributing to the Arts and Culture Strategy. It includes a range of questions designed to explore the community’s vision, priorities, and ideas for the Shire’s creative future. Have your say now!

A groundbreaking study from the University of Cincinnati, published in the journal Cities and recently shared by the Committee for Perth, provides compelling evidence that street art significantly boosts foot traffic and community vitality. The research found that "murals are associated with higher foot traffic, underscoring their ability to attract people and energize public spaces".

This research validates what public art managers have experienced firsthand—but it also highlights a critical challenge: How do we quantify and maintain the value of these community assets over time?

This is precisely why we developed Charter (https://www.charterapp.com.au/) - a comprehensive public art collection management platform designed by specialists for collection managers.

Charter amplifies the impact identified in this study through the following features:
- Strategic Portfolio Growth: Use comprehensive analytics to identify optimal locations for new murals based on demographic data, existing foot traffic patterns, and community needs.
- Proactive Asset Management: Monitor artwork condition in real-time to ensure your community remains vibrant.

Our roadmap also includes features that will allow for:
- Data-Driven Decision Making: Tracking which artworks generate the most community engagement and foot traffic, helping strategically place future installations.
- Quantified Community Value: Move beyond anecdotal evidence to precise valuation and impact measurement - crucial for securing ongoing funding and demonstrating ROI.

The Cincinnati study reinforces that public art isn't just about aesthetics—it's about measurable community and economic impact. Tools like Charter ensure you can capture, maintain, and increase that impact systematically.

For collection managers working to justify budgets, demonstrate impact, or scale their programs, this research provides the evidence base, and Charter provides the management infrastructure.
