People of Perth and southwest WA, Alcoa are strip mining in our drinking water catchments - Serpentine, North Dandalup and South Dandalup.

They are mining in reservoir protection zones where everyday people aren’t allowed to hike or camp due to water quality risks. They want to build a pipeline to take our drinking water straight out of Serpentine Dam.

Strip mining in drinking water catchments is a disaster - the risks are enormous and the consequences could be catastrophic.

Water Corporation, has warned that contamination of our drinking water is “certain” if Alcoa’s expansion continues. Why was this ignored and their advice excluded from Alcoa’s operating conditions?

These forests supply drinking water to Perth, Kalgoorlie, the Goldfields and towns all across southwest WA. We should all be very worried.

It’s not a matter of IF - it’s a matter of WHEN. And when disaster strikes, it will affect hundreds of thousands of people and cost millions, if not billions of dollars.

We are not anti-mining or anti-Alcoa, but our health and wellbeing are seriously at stake.

Many people don’t know what’s happening. Alcoa have already cleared 28,000 hectares of the world’s only jarrah forest - 14x the City of Perth. Their mining agreement is so old, it’s exempt from most of our environmental laws. Now is a critical time for change.

We’re urgently calling on the state government to do what’s right for Western Australians - ban all mining in our drinking water catchments.

Speak out, share this message, and hold our leaders accountable. The future of Western Australia depends on what we do today 🩵✊🌳

Alcoa LIED in their adverts and tried to deceive us all. Then when found out, there’s no apology, just weasel words about “definitions” that seem to drip with arrogance and contempt for our community concerns.

Never forget that Alcoa illegally and secretly built a pipeline to transport PFAS (toxic forever chemicals) over one of our drinking water dams, showing blatant DISRESPECT for our rules and processes that apply to everyone else. Can we ever trust them again??

People are SICK of the destruction, the risk to our drinking water, the toxic waste, the lies and deceit, the arrogance and the blatant disrespect.

Water Corp have said that contamination of a drinking water dam is certain if Alcoa continues. Bird Life Western Australia have said our precious black cockatoos will become extinct 🤯🤯🤯

How many more warnings do we need? Do we wait for a CATASTROPHE before enough is enough??

We are so glad the truth has finally come out!! The community and scientists were right all along. This is only the beginning 💙✊🌊🌊🌊

These beautiful baby quokkas live deep in the jarrah forest of the Mundaring Weir catchment ❤️

They are at risk from mining and exploration in the forests that surround their homes, including around Serpentine and Jarrahdale 💔💔

Quokkas are a threatened species whose numbers have dramatically declined due, in part, to land clearing, foxes and bushfires. It is a miracle these little creatures have survived so far.

Please help protect them by adding your voice to the growing community opposition against Alcoa’s expansion into the world’s only jarrah forests 🙏🙏

‼️ ATTENTION PERTH PEOPLE ‼️

⛔️ Alcoa Expansion planned for Mundaring Weir drinking water catchment in the Perth Hills ⛔️

Alcoa have released their 2023-2027 plans for mining in the Darling Range.

Buried within is a MASSIVE expansion of Alcoa’s operations into the Mandoon Bilya - Helena River catchment that feeds Mundaring Weir and our drinking water supply. Check our map to see what is being proposed and where 👀👀👀

🙏🙏🙏 PLEASE ACT NOW:

✅ Complete a short survey before 21 August 2025 to tell the EPA what you think about Alcoa’s plans: https://tinyurl.com/54d2hynf

✅ Share this post, tag your friends and ask them to complete the survey

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT??

Public access is restricted to most of the catchment - hiking and camping are banned and we are not even allowed to collect water samples for our healthy rivers program from some areas🚷🚳🚱

Yet Alcoa wants to clear parts of Mundaring State Forest, build haulage roads and undertake exploration drilling in preparation for potential future mining. How can be less risky than hiking and camping?? 🤯🤯🤯

Have you seen what Alcoa has done around Serpentine Dam drinking water catchment?? Take a drive out to the hills and see for yourself.

Alcoa’s mining lease over the ENTIRE Darling Range was established decades ago when the world was a very different place. Our forests are now under massive pressure that we couldn’t have foreseen back then - drying climate, low rainfall, dieback, PSHB etc. 💔💔💔

We urgently need to RETHINK the scale of mining in our south west forests before it’s too late!!

Starting with: NO MORE MINING IN OUR DRINKING WATER CATCHMENTS!! 🚱🚱🚱

❌❌❌❌❌❌❌❌❌❌❌❌

This is some of the last undisturbed forest of the Darling Range, the WORLD’S ONLY JARRAH FOREST, and where we recently discovered a new population of mainland quokkas💔💔💔

We believe Alcoa’s plans could cause:

⛔️ Devastating and irreversible damage to the ecological and cultural values of the Perth Hills

⛔️ Unacceptable risks to our drinking water supply

⛔️ Loss of social and recreational values that will affect future generations long after we are gone

Your opinion might be different and that’s OK – it is SO important that everyone has their say on something that will impact their future before it is too late…..

*️⃣ Complete this survey and share with your networks: https://tinyurl.com/54d2hynf

We had a lot of fun working on this awesome project!

🌊 RIVER SAMPLING RESULTS 🌊

In 2024, we collected surface water and sediment samples from 12 locations across the Mandoon Bilya (Helena River) catchment.

The objective was to increase our understanding of the river’s health and contribute towards a baseline for further investigation and monitoring future changes.

This work is significant as it represents the most locations sampled on the river in a single sampling event in the last 20 years (and possibly ever!).

The sampling was enabled by funding from three local governments (Shire of Mundaring, City of Kalamunda and City of Swan) that was facilitated by the Local Health Authorities Analytical Committee, a statutory WA State Government entity under the Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1911.

The project was also supported by Parks and Wildlife Service, who lent us sampling equipment and helped with site access, Senversa, who helped us process the data and review the draft report, and Evergreen WA who helped us with the report writing and creation of the maps.

Thank you to everyone who has supported this important project! It is a brilliant example of what can be achieved when community and government work together towards shared goals.

The link to the sampling report and a summary of key findings are in the comments! 🤓
