Waiting weeks to get paid usually isn’t about slow clients. It’s about the system behind the invoice.

Three habits that fix it fast:
1. Invoice the day the job’s done. Not Friday, not “when I get a minute.” Send it before you’ve packed the ute.

2. Put your payment terms in writing. Due date, how to pay, and what happens if it’s late. Clients pay faster when they know exactly what’s expected.

3. Set automatic reminders. Your software chases for you, so you never have to feel awkward about it.

Paying someone as a subbie? Answer these 6 questions before your next pay run.

Do they decide how and when the job gets done?
Can they send someone else in their place?
Do they bring their own tools?
Do they fix mistakes at their own cost?
Do they work for other clients too?
Are they paid for the finished job, not the hours?

Mostly no? That's a red flag, and paying someone mainly for their labour can mean super applies too.

A higher hourly rate doesn't automatically mean more expensive. Neither does a lower one mean cheaper.

An employee's pay rate is only part of the cost. On top of that you're carrying super, annual leave, sick leave, workers comp, and payroll tax if you're above the threshold. A subcontractor's rate looks higher on paper, but there's no leave, no super obligation, no ongoing entitlements sitting behind it.

Neither option is automatically better. It depends on your job flow, how much control you need over the work, and what your margins can actually carry. But you can't compare the two properly until you know what each one is really costing you.

Common myth, and an expensive one: if someone has an ABN, they're automatically a subcontractor.

Not true.

The ATO doesn't care what paperwork someone's holding, it looks at the actual working relationship. Who controls how the job gets done, who supplies the tools, whether they can send someone else in their place. Someone can have an ABN and invoice you every week and still legally be your employee.

Get it wrong and it's not the worker who wears the risk, it's you. Back pay, unpaid super, penalties, all backdated.

Think you know the difference between a subbie and an employee? Most tradies get this one wrong.

It's not just about who invoices who. The ATO looks at control, whether they can send someone else to do the work, who supplies the tools, and how much independence they actually have on the job. Pay someone as a subbie when the relationship looks like employment, and you could be up for back pay, super, and penalties.

This isn't a small admin detail. It's one of the easiest compliance mistakes to make without realising it.
