Delighted to have just joined the Board of Harvey Water as an independent non-executive director and member of the Finance and Risk Committee. My last week has been an immersion into all things Harvey Water with a strategic planning day, followed by a site tour and a board meeting. All in the beautiful area surrounding Harvey. I am really looking forward to working alongside the Board and Executive team to deliver on the new 3 year strategic plan.

Last chance to join my finance workshop this coming Thursday.

If you’ve ever looked at your business financial reports and thought “I should probably understand this better”, this workshop is for you.

In this interactive session I explain accounting concepts in plain English and use visual tools to make profit and loss statements and balance sheets easier to understand.

Previous participants commented:
"I loved the small intimate nature of the group. Felt safe to get things wrong & felt supported by others as I was learning new concepts."

"Interchangeable terms used by accountants – clarifying that they all meant the same thing was especially useful, & helped to make the various items & concepts clearer."

One of the biggest mistakes I have seen when a senior finance person leaves the family business is replacing like with like. I understand the instinct. You want someone who feels familiar, safe and similar.

But the business has changed.
• Technology has advanced.
• Risks have increased.
• Governance expectations are higher.
• The next generation of a family business may expect something different from the finance function.

In many family businesses, a bookkeeper was perfectly adequate 25 years ago. Today, that same business may need a qualified accountant with contemporary systems, technology and reporting capability.

Retirement presents an opportunity. Instead of asking: “Who looks like the person we’re losing?” Ask: “What does the business need for the next decade?”

Before recruiting:
• Clarify future strategy
• Review systems and automation opportunities
• Strengthen documentation and controls
• Redefine the role before advertising it

Succession isn’t just about continuity. It’s about building resilience.

If this situation feels familiar, I’ve unpacked some practical steps in more detail in my latest article.
