🎧 New episode just dropped!

This week on Dental Success: Beyond Chairside, Michelle chats with Dr Edwin “Mac” McDonald, a seasoned practice owner and leadership coach, about what really makes a practice run well, clear leadership, strong culture, and better communication.

Mac shares practical insights from 40 years in dentistry, including a line every owner needs to hear, “Clear wins, fuzzy doesn’t win.” When expectations aren’t clear, the team fills in the gaps, and that’s when mistakes, frustration, and turnover creep in.

In this episode you’ll hear:
- Why communication breaks down as practices grow
- How one-on-ones strengthen trust and performance
- What onboarding should actually achieve
- Why ongoing training and development keeps good people
- The culture focus: attract, retain, develop

A successful dental practice needs strong foundations.

Clinical skill matters, but it needs to be supported by clear systems, consistent communication and effective teamwork.

Patients notice the whole experience, not just the treatment.

They notice how they are greeted, how clearly things are explained and how organised the practice feels.

Strong practices are built on:

Clinical excellence
Patient experience
Teamwork
Values
Clear systems
Continuous improvement

When these areas work together, the practice becomes easier to lead, easier to run and easier for patients to trust.

Michelle didn’t plan to build a career in dentistry.

With a background in banking and finance, she entered the dental industry almost by accident when she began helping with the bookkeeping in her family’s dental practice.

That role quickly expanded into HR, systems, marketing, patient communication, team management and the many operational responsibilities involved in running a practice.

Working inside the business provided Michelle with a practical understanding of the challenges dental practice owners face, and the systems needed to support sustainable growth.

That experience continues to guide the work we do today at Aligned Business Consulting.

Technology can improve efficiency in a dental practice, but only when it is used well.

Many practices already have tools that could save time, improve communication and reduce manual tasks.

These may include:

Practice management software
Automated reminders
Online forms
Digital imaging
AI scribing
Inventory systems
Remote monitoring
Review requests
Marketing tools

The challenge is not always access to technology.

Often, the issue is implementation.

The team needs to understand how to use the system, where it fits into the workflow and what problem it is meant to solve.

A tool will not fix an unclear process.

But the right tool, used well, can reduce pressure, improve patient experience and help the practice run more smoothly.

Aligned Business Consulting supports dental and specialist practice owners to review workflows, systems and technology use so efficiency can improve in a practical way.

Michelle’s View Monday: Too Many Hats, Not Enough Headspace

Many practice owners are:
- Clinician
- Practice Manager
- Human Resource Manager, marketer and problem-solver

All at once.

As the practice grows, this stops working. The owner becomes the bottleneck and the team feels stuck.

This week, ask:
“What am I doing that someone else could own with the right structure?”

That’s where your next role or system needs to be built.
