This week, we received an email that reminded us exactly why we do what we do at Marlu Resources Group
Four years ago, we employed a very capable Aboriginal man named Damo as a Security Officer. He was hardworking, committed, and determined to build a better future for himself and his family.
This week, he stood before the full bench of the Supreme Court and took his oath as a lawyer.
Let that sink in.
From Security Officer to Lawyer. ⚖️👏🏽
In his email, he thanked us for providing stable employment that allowed him to complete his studies, support his family and pursue his ambitions. He also spoke about the loyalty and trust we had shown him during some challenging times.
But here's the thing.
We didn't employ him to meet a KPI.
We didn't support him to achieve an Indigenous employment target.
We didn't do it for a corporate report, a Reconciliation Action Plan or a good news story.
We did it because its simply what we do.
We saw a capable person, gave him an opportunity, believed in his potential and stood by him.
Sometimes the greatest outcomes in business aren't measured in revenue, contracts, statistics or percentages.
They're measured in the lives we have the privilege of being part of.
One line from his email particularly resonated with me:
"We are not just an artist or an athlete even though these are noble pursuits. We are Lawyers, Entrepreneurs, Doctors, Politicians, Engineers and will not be silenced”
And he's absolutely right.
Aboriginal excellence exists across every profession, every industry and every level of leadership. Sometimes all that's needed is an opportunity, a little flexibility and someone willing to back you.
We are incredibly proud of what he has achieved. But make no mistake, he did the hard work. He earned that qualification. He made those sacrifices. He deserves every bit of this success. We simply had the privilege of supporting him along the way.
His final words were that he hoped one day he could pay it forward.
We have absolutely no doubt that he will.
This is what meaningful Aboriginal participation looks like when it goes beyond the targets and becomes part of who you are as a business.
