Ever wondered what the difference is between Videography and Cinematography?

In video production the two terms are often used interchangeably, when they don’t actually mean the exact same thing.

The main difference between the two:

--> a Videographer captures what happens in the moment in a way they see fit. The shots are often driven by the moments. You’ll often see videographers capture events as they require a more re-active style of shooting.

--> a Cinematographer pre plans most of the shots as they shape a specific story or visual treatment. There is more control over the lighting, framing, movement, colour grade and style of the video. Sometimes, more crew and professional gear is required for technical shots. The moments captured are specific and planned. More time is invested into filming each scene.

Both approaches have their benefits and one approach is not better than the other. The choice depends highly on desired project outcome and often impacts budget.

Welcome to Gareth, our new technical and creative powerhouse behind the camera. He joins our team with an extensive background working in the camera department across feature films, scripted TV, documentary, reality television, music videos, television commercial and corporate content. Gareth brings an adaptable approach for any situation, and a keen eye for details while also preserving quality, and authenticity.

He is driven by storytelling, producing strong visuals, and creating videos that are not only engaging but also purposeful and intentional for the right target audience.

Corporate anniversary videos and campaigns can easily default to a dry timeline of dates, structural growth, and corporate charts.

It doesn't have to be this way!

An anniversary or celebration is an excellent moment in time to tell the stories that are present behind the achievements, build momentum internally and externally. It's also an opportunity to build lasting assets that can help drive the momentum even further, long past the anniversary date.

For Carers WA we helped produce stories of 30 years of historical milestones with their community at heart. By layering custom animation over authentic human stories, we transformed abstract achievements into a fluid, engaging narrative that resonates.

Enter the silent superpower of video text.

On-screen and in-video text work hard to communicate context through words that might get missed without sound.

While visuals can do a lot of heavy lifting, never underestimate the power of assets such as: captions, key words, headings and lower thirds to help communicate context and information.

What started as a 2+ hour in-person session became 3 streamlined digital modules, now hosted on an internal learning platform.

Well, the choice of lens is everything.

See how the focal length changes the entire composition and facial geometry? Going from a flattering 85mm to a wide-angle 16mm isn't just a zoom, it’s a completely different look and each choice comes its own focal lenght and lens distortion.

Understanding these subtle shifts and how a lense can make a subject look and come across is an important detail that can't be overlooked in the production process.
