Combining STEM learning with practical activities to inspire the next generation 💡💻⚙️

CME’s Inspiring Girls event in Kalgoorlie brought together students from years 6 to 8 and women working across WA’s resources sector for a day of hands-on activities, conversations and career inspiration.

Students had the opportunity to meet women working in the industry, discover the huge variety of roles available and learn more about where an interest in science, technology, engineering and more could take them.

A big thank you to the industry representatives who shared their experiences, answered plenty of questions and helped inspire the students to imagine where their own interests could take them.

Western Australia is sitting on more than $8 trillion in known mineral and energy resources, an extraordinary opportunity that points to an exciting future for the State’s resources sector.

CME’s new Unearthing Potential report, with analysis by EY-Parthenon, found developing just 80% of WA’s currently identified resources base could generate $8.1 trillion in saleable product value, $476 billion in State royalties and up to 158,000 onsite operational jobs per year.

Released as CME marks its 125th anniversary, the report highlights the role WA’s diverse resources can continue to play in supporting jobs, investment and global supply chains for generations to come.

CME Chief Executive Aaron Morey said, “CME has spent 125 years backing this industry. Unearthing Potential shows why the next 125 will be even bigger.”

This week, CME hosted news outlets from across Australia for our Pilbara Familiarisation Tour, showcasing the region’s evolving resources and energy landscape.

Over 2 days, the group visited Perdaman, Woodside, Yara Pilbara and BCI Minerals, hearing directly from industry leaders about the projects underway across the region and the opportunities and challenges facing the sector.

The visits covered a range of issues including energy security, LNG, fertiliser and ammonia production, critical minerals, salt and potash, food security, jobs, housing and investment.

A huge thank you to the media who travelled to Karratha and to Perdaman, Woodside Energy, Yara Pilbara and BCI Minerals for hosting the visits and sharing their insights.

The 2026 CME STEM Showcase brought together the opportunity for creativity and building crucial STEM skills for the students of Newman SHS, inspiring them with hands-on, industry relevant learning.

From robotics and coding to engineering challenges, the Showcase demonstrated innovation and problem solving, showing how STEM connects classroom learning with real-world opportunities and future careers.

CME is proud to work alongside Newman SHS and BHP to help create meaningful STEM learning experiences and pathways for students in the Pilbara.

Yesterday Alcoa Australia marked the start of construction on Australia’s first gallium plant of scale with a ground-breaking ceremony at its Wagerup Alumina Refinery in Western Australia’s South West.

The facility is expected to produce about 100 tonnes of gallium a year — around 10 per cent of global supply — providing a new source of the critical mineral.

Dignitaries from all three nations joined Alcoa employees at Wagerup to toast the milestone.

Construction is expected to support up to 200 local jobs, with around 20 permanent roles once the plant is operational.

Great to visit Rio Tinto's 60 Years in Western Australia exhibition, now open at Central Park in Perth.

The exhibition celebrates the people, partnerships and communities that have helped shape Rio Tinto's six decades of contribution to WA, featuring historical photographs, stories, and milestones from across the years.

If you're in the city, it's well worth a visit before the exhibition closes on 21 August.
