Final day underway until we wrap on Africa Down Under 2026.

We caught up with Mark on the final day to get his honest take on how the week went.

Short answer: busy. Really busy.

More conversations than previous years. More reconnecting with clients. More of the kind of catch-ups that actually mean something when you're working across a region as dynamic as Africa.

But beyond the handshakes and the familiar faces, what stood out most was the learning.

There are some genuinely exciting initiatives happening across the African region right now and understanding where Mudex can play a role in supporting those is exactly why we show up to events like this.

All in all, a positive week. The kind that reminds you why face-to-face still matters in this industry.

Day two is underway at Africa Down Under - but first, a look back at day one.

The conference this year is already feeling like a strong one with Day 1 being awesome.

Familiar faces, good chats, and catching up with clients, partners and good people.

It was great to see blokes like Nick Premus from KC Drilling, Jim Purcell from Mincon, Damien Valente from Capital Limited, Kelvin Brown from XYZ Directional, Alex Butler, and Steven Vinger.

Some we see regularly on the other side of the world. Some are right here in our own backyard in Perth.

Either way, it is always good to be in the same room.

Day one at Africa Down Under. Booth 74 is live.

For Theuns, this is his first ADU — and his third time in Australia. Safe to say he is settling in just fine.

We are here to talk muds, drilling, and whatever else under the sun. That is the part of these events we genuinely enjoy, the real chats.

One thing worth stopping by for if you have not seen it yet.

We have our Enviro Pack packaging on display. It is how we are delivering drilling fluids with 90% less plastic than traditional drilling packaging. Less waste on site. Less environmental impact. Same product quality you would expect from Mudex.

Losing returns mid-drill is one of the most frustrating things that can happen on site.

Time stops. Costs climb. And you need a fix fast.

X PLUG is what you reach for.

It is a Mudex lost circulation product used to help seal fractured formations, voids and high-loss zones so you can get circulation back and keep drilling.

Three reasons it earns a spot in the yard:

It works when you need it.

Mix it, get it into the hole, and give it time to do its job, instead of watching the tanks drop while you wait on a more complicated fix.

It is built for the ground that causes losses. Fractured rock, gravel, vugs and unconsolidated zones are where lost circulation hits hardest. X PLUG is part of the Mudex LCM range used in those conditions.

It is simple to mix and deploy on site. Your crew can get it down the rods and get back to work.

For larger holes or stubborn losses, X PLUG is often used with other Mudex LCMs such as X FRAC or SEAL X.

If lost circulation is a regular problem on your sites, it is worth having X PLUG on hand before you need it.

Less plastic on site. Same performance.

Our Eco Drum and Eco Bucket from Enviropack cuts plastic use by over 90% compared to traditional drilling fluid packaging.

Here is a quick breakdown of how it works and some features of our packaging.

For powder products:
The box uses a double-layer heat shrink wrap. Water stays out. Product stays dry. To open, use the small knife supplied and cut the top section only. Leave the bottom sealed. Scoop what you need, then reseal it the same way you opened it. Simple.

For liquid products:
Same double-layer protection. A sealable lid sits on top of an internal bladder. Do not pull the bladder out of the box. Open from the top, pour what you need, close the cap and move on. Finish one before you open the next.

Why does this matter?

On site, packaging that gets damaged, contaminated or misused means wasted product and more waste heading to landfill.

This system is built to be durable, resealable and easy to manage. Less mess. Less waste. Less hassle.

SO Dave flew out to a remote site to deliver a Mud School to some of the younger crew who had experience on the tools, so no matter what stage you are at with drilling to understand your muds better is always going to be beneficial. No matter where you are, we will get out there and deliver.

Most drillers know annular velocity matters.

Fewer understand what actually happens inside an HDD bore.

On an HDD rig, the drill rods don't sit in the middle of the hole. They sit on the bottom.

That means the fluid velocity is not even across the annulus.

At the top of the hole, above the drill pipe, you've got maximum flow.

Down by the drill pipe, right where it's sitting on the bottom, you've got the lowest annular velocity.

And that's exactly where cuttings want to build up.

That's the problem. Slow-moving fluid at the bottom of the annulus means cuttings bed up around the pipe and don't get out.

This is why coupling rotation matters so much for hole cleaning in HDD. It's not just about moving fluid. It's about disturbing that low-velocity zone so cuttings don't settle.

And HDD gets more complex from there.

Unlike a vertical well, your fluid can actually be travelling in two different directions depending on where you are in the bore profile. Pushing in versus pulling back through a high-angle or flat section, the flow behaves completely differently. Dune transport becomes a real factor.

Little Throwback to Dave out on a rig back in his drilling days somewhere in good old WA roughly around 1997.

Anyway look, it isn't always the case with Mud doctors but alot of the people who understand drilling the best are the ones who've actually done it.

Tricky formations, unpredictable ground conditions, that feeling when a job is pushing back and you just have to work it out.

Dave has been there. All of our team have.

It's why the advice we give isn't just out of a textbook or a lab.

Everybody loves a grouting job.

Dempsey was out on site recently with the team from Soil Mechanics Pty Ltd, getting his hands dirty on the job alongside the crew.

The mix was solid on paper. The SG was sitting right where it needed to be, slurry coming out clean.

Thanks to the crew at Soil Mechanics for having us site and being a valued client of Mudex and for your continued support.

Someone's gotta feed the crew that keeps the wheels turning.

This Friday we handed the apron to Dave, who came in and cooked up a proper brekky for the manufacturing team out the back.

It was a small gesture for a big effort.

These are the people who show up every day and put genuine care into every product that leaves our facility. Every batch mixed, every drum filled, every order out the door on time. That consistency doesn't happen by accident.

Our manufacturing crew works hard to make sure that when a driller on site opens a Mudex product, it does exactly what it's supposed to do. That standard is something we don't take lightly, and neither do they.

So this Friday, brekky/morning tea was on us. Or more accurately, on Dave.

Cheers to the manufacturing team. You are the ones making it all possible. 🍳

August is already delivering.

John has been over east this week running another Mud Schools, and honestly, it is what these sessions are all about.

Not just ticking a training box.

It is about getting real, practical information across in a way that actually sticks, whether someone is just starting out or has years in the field.

Sometimes things do not click on the day. That is fine.

But when a driller heads back to site and starts seeing what was covered playing out in front of them, that is the moment. That is why we run these.

Upskilling engineers, building confidence in teams, giving people tools they can actually use. Every Mud School, beginner or advanced, that is the goal.

Then yesterday, Dempsey was out in Kalgoorlie for Diggers and Dealers and the place looked seriously good.

Two different settings, same energy - showing up, connecting with the people doing the work, and being useful.

August is shaping up nicely. We are cooking.
