📢 RBA CASH RATE INCREASED BY 0.25%
The Reserve Bank of Australia has today, 29 September 2026, increased the cash rate by 0.25% (25 basis points), from 4.35% to 4.60%. The RBA says inflation remains elevated and monetary policy needs to remain restrictive to help bring inflation back towards target. Reserve Bank of Australia
🏠 What could this mean for Australian homeowners?
If your lender passes on the full 0.25% increase, borrowers on variable-rate home loans could see their repayments increase.
For illustration, on a 30-year principal & interest loan, assuming the interest rate increases from 6.00% to 6.25%, the approximate additional monthly repayment would be:
- $100,000 loan → +$16/month
- $500,000 loan → +$81/month
- $750,000 loan → +$121/month
- $1,000,000 loan → +$162/month
For a household with a $750,000 mortgage, that's approximately $1,450 extra per year if the full increase is passed on and other loan assumptions remain unchanged.
🇦🇺 How could higher rates impact Australians?
Higher interest rates generally mean higher repayments for variable-rate borrowers, while fixed-rate borrowers may not feel the impact until their fixed period ends. Higher borrowing costs can also reduce borrowing capacity for new buyers, put additional pressure on household budgets and encourage households to reduce discretionary spending. This slowing in demand is part of how higher interest rates are intended to help bring inflation down over time. The RBA has previously noted that tighter financial conditions have been slowing consumer spending and housing activity. Reserve Bank of Australia
