Working with regional shires and local councils gives you a real appreciation for how much gets managed behind the scenes.

•Small teams.
•Large responsibilities.
•Ageing infrastructure.
•Contractors.
•Volunteers.
•Public interfaces.
•Community expectations.

And despite the challenges, these teams just keep getting it done.

The reality is, safety in local government isn’t about flashy systems or overcomplicated paperwork.

It’s about practical risk management that works in the real world and supports the people doing the job.

Proud to support shires, councils and regional organisations across WA with practical, straight-talking WHS support.

Falls from height remain one of the leading causes of serious injuries in housing construction. 🏠

The risks of falls increase significantly when roof pitches are above 26° and work is carried out from a height of 3 metres or more.

Contractor Management: where many businesses get it wrong

Contractor management has been a hot topic this week with my clients and for good reason.

If you think “contractors manage their own safety”, this is your reminder:
-under WA WHS legislation, you still have a duty of care when they work at your site or under your direction.

The questions I keep getting:
Do contractors need an induction?
Who’s responsible if something goes wrong?
Is a SWMS enough?

Good contractor management includes:
*Proper pre-qualification
*Site-specific inductions
*Clear scopes of work
*SWMS and risk assessments aligned to your
workplace
*Ongoing supervision

If a contractor gets injured, regulators won’t ask who employed them, they’ll ask who controlled the work.
Safety doesn’t stop at the payroll.

This image pretty much sums up how I approach safety.
Yes, I care about risk assessments, legislation, audits, and systems.
Yes, I’ll absolutely call out unsafe practices and compliance gaps.
And yes, there will usually be coffee involved.
But here’s the part safety often gets wrong:
If people don’t feel safe to speak up, your safety system won’t work.
Psychological safety isn’t “soft” safety, it’s a critical risk control.
It’s what allows workers to:
*Call out hazards
*Admit mistakes early
*Ask questions instead of guessing
*Speak up before someone gets hurt
You can have the best paperwork in the world, but silence on site is a red flag
At Safety Alliance, we focus on safety that actually works:
✔️ Practical, site-specific advice
✔️ Straight-talking compliance (no BS — yes, the mug is accurate 😄)
✔️ Psychological safety that fits real workplaces, not textbooks
Real safety lives in people and conversations, not binders.
And yes… it usually starts with coffee 😉

As a former police officer, my heart is with every first responder affected by today’s tragic murder-suicide.

What you attend, what you see, and what you carry home doesn’t just “switch off” at the end of a shift. Those images stay with you.
