ON THE DRAWING BOARD | COASTAL RETREATS

A new collection of architecturally designed coastal retreats for Western Australia’s South West.

Designed to sit lightly within the landscape, the retreats bring together contemporary architecture, prefabricated modular construction and environmentally responsive design.

Simple gabled forms and a restrained material palette create a calm, understated architecture, while carefully considered orientation, natural light, passive solar design and cross ventilation shape the experience within.

Passive House principles are also being explored to enhance year-round comfort and reduce operational energy demands, with prefabricated construction providing greater control over quality, efficiency and site impact.

Architecture that is simple, resilient and connected to place.

Casa Riviera | Master Suite

A carefully composed sequence of spaces, where restraint, materiality and precision shape the character of the master suite.

The walk-in robe forms the transition between bedroom and ensuite, wrapped in warm timber joinery and defined by an oversized mirror that strengthens the geometry and sense of space. The result is architectural and refined, while still feeling warm, intimate and unmistakably residential.

Within the ensuite, a restrained material palette gives greater importance to texture and detail. Feature tiling is meticulously set out across the bath wall, with the recessed niche integrated into the overall composition.

The same consideration extends to the transitions between spaces. A custom cavity sliding door disappears completely into the wall between the bedroom and walk-in robe, maintaining a clean, uninterrupted opening. Beyond, a timber-lined portal continues the warmth of the joinery and deliberately frames the transition into the ensuite.

Throughout, materials and detailing are deliberately restrained, allowing proportion, texture and precision to create a master suite that feels architectural and sophisticated, yet warm, calm and homely.

A sense of luxury created not through excess, but through considered design.

Casa Riviera | Master Ensuite

Warm, timeless and quietly refined.

The master ensuite at Casa Riviera was designed around a palette of warm, homely tones, balanced with clean lines and a restrained material selection.

A sense of sophistication is introduced through the book-matched porcelain benchtop, where the expressive veining becomes a feature against the otherwise subtle palette. Feature wall tiling, precision set-outs, aligned joints and integrated niches add texture and detail while maintaining a clean and considered finish.

The timber-lined opening to the walk-in robe brings warmth to the transition between spaces, softening the tiled surfaces, while crisp white joinery and black tapware provide contrast and definition. Natural light moves through the space, highlighting the texture and subtle variation within the finishes throughout the day.

The result is a master ensuite that feels refined without being overstated, clean and contemporary, yet warm, comfortable and distinctly homely.

Casa Riviera | Maylands

A key design move at Casa Riviera was the introduction of a two-storey parapet along the boundary, allowing us to maximise the usable area of the upper-floor balcony.

On a compact 267m² site, this balcony becomes the home’s primary outdoor living space, extending the internal living areas and capitalising on views towards the Swan River and Perth city skyline.

Achieving the two-storey boundary wall did not come without its challenges, requiring careful navigation of planning requirements, together with structural and construction considerations to deliver the architectural intent.

The result is a home that makes the most of its compact site, turning constraints into opportunities for space, outlook and outdoor living.

Behind the scenes at Casa Riviera.

The scullery was designed as a hardworking extension of the kitchen—keeping preparation, cooking and entertaining running seamlessly behind the main space.

A dedicated 600mm wall oven provides additional cooking capacity, while porcelain benchtops and splashbacks create a durable, refined finish suited to everyday use.

Integrated heat lamps above the bench add another layer of functionality, keeping plated food warm while entertaining—bringing a touch of commercial-kitchen thinking into the home.

Casa Riviera

The upper level of Casa Riviera was conceived with the sense of luxury and escape associated with boutique hotels and penthouse living.

Kitchen, dining and living spaces flow together as a series of connected experiences, shaped by sweeping curves, rich materiality and carefully framed outlooks.

Elevating the primary living spaces creates privacy and natural light, while opening the home towards views across the Swan River and Perth skyline.

Casa Riviera

Big presence. Surprisingly small footprint.

Set on just 267m² of inner-city land, this residence challenges the idea of what can be achieved on a compact site.
Behind its bold street presence is approximately 340m² of home, carefully composed across two levels to create an unexpected sense of space, privacy and generosity.

Sweeping curves, deep reveals and strong sculptural forms define the street elevation. Beyond the facade, the architecture opens towards its elevated riverside setting drawing in natural light, capturing expansive outlooks and creating a distinctly different experience of inner-city living.

A generous architectural home, shaped by a surprisingly small piece of land.

Behind the Design | No Birds Car Rental Expansion

The best architectural solutions often emerge from the most complex design challenges.
For the No Birds Car Rental Expansion, the brief extended well beyond designing a new facade. The challenge was to expand an existing commercial premises while retaining the original corner building, creating a unified architectural identity that allowed the existing and new buildings to read as one cohesive development.
Throughout the design process, we explored a number of facade concepts, each responding differently to the site’s constraints, the client’s operational requirements and the broader vision for the project.
The selected curved fin facade was ultimately chosen because it provided the most cohesive response to the project’s objectives—unifying the existing and new building while balancing architectural expression, operational requirements and long-term performance.
Every design decision involves balancing competing priorities. Exploring multiple architectural directions allowed us to evaluate different responses before refining the solution that best reflected the project’s vision, constraints and long-term objectives.

Construction Progress | Taylor Road, Nedlands

It’s always rewarding to see months of design and coordination begin to take shape on site.

A key milestone has now been reached, with the final suspended concrete floor slabs formed and ready for pouring. Timber framing is also progressing to the rear dwellings, where the upper floors utilise a reverse brick veneer construction system. This approach retains the benefits of internal masonry while allowing the exterior to incorporate lightweight architectural cladding, creating a contemporary architectural outcome.

At ground level, face brickwork with matching mortar establishes a timeless material palette that will define the character of the development.

Designed in collaboration with Canute Australia, these eight premium two-storey dwellings have been carefully planned to achieve Silver Level Liveable Housing standards, delivering homes that are both beautiful and adaptable for the future.

Car Rental Expansion

Every successful commercial project begins with understanding the business behind it.
This proposal responds to the expansion of an established vehicle rental operation by retaining the existing corner building and introducing a new adjoining development, allowing both buildings to function as one larger commercial premises.
Beyond increasing floor area, the project focuses on creating a unified architectural identity while significantly improving operational efficiency. The proposal incorporates triple vehicle stackers to maximise storage capacity within the site’s footprint and introduces a contemporary façade that brings new life to the existing streetscape.
As with every project, the design evolved through exploration and refinement before arriving at the preferred architectural direction presented here.
