Good luck today to our partners in Superstock racing at Ballarat. He will enjoy the step up to 2000 metres.

For interest sake, his younger half-brother was sold for $150,000 as a yearling to former Te Akua trainer Jamie Richards to race in Hong Kong. He has had one start for a win. His name is The All Out.

Astero runs tomorrow

Our last start Canberra winner Astero will go around at Goulburn tomorrow in a 1400 metre class one (race 4 12.10pm WST).

He goes up 100 metres in distance from his last start which trainer Matthew Smith believes he will enjoy. The track is a heavy 9 (last start was heavy 8). Matthew thinks he is going to be very competitive.

Oceanex

Wow, we are still coming down from the high of Oceanex running in the Melbourne Cup. She has finished 11th beaten 5.5 lengths.

She had to spend some fuel down the straight the first time to put herself in the race. It was a good ride by Dean Yendall to find a position with cover. She lost a shoe in running and pulled up with slight heat stress. She did her best.

Now we know you cannot look at it this way, but out of the run comes another “what if” story. “What if” the Europeans could not come due to Covid – 19. If so, she runs 6th beaten 3.2 lengths. The first six would have looked like this
1st The Chosen One
2nd Persan
3rd Verry Elleegant
4th Russian Camelot
5th Finche
6th Oceanex

Jockey’s comments
She went super. I rode her to run the top 12. I got her into a lovely position, had cover, it was always going to be tricky from the barrier 17. I knew the speed was drawn outside of me, but I still had the task of getting across and finding the right spot, which she did. She switched off lovely and I rode her to get the journey and to help the owners get some prizemoney.

Racenet’s comments

Clinton Payne says (paraphased): Super run. Did a bit of work to offset a three-wide spot early and stuck to the task and was brave in the straight after firing all her bullets.

Oceanex draws badly in the Melbourne Cup

Our Melbourne Cup-bound 5YO mare Oceanex has unfortunately drawn badly (barrier 17) just to add to the enormous task in front of her on Tuesday. We are under no illusion as to her chances.

However, she is in the race that stops the nation! Our partners will enjoy the ride come what may.

Interesting statistics highlighted recently by Racing Post on the background of the last 10 winners of the Melbourne Cup:

All winners had won at Group level going into the race (two were Group 1 winners)

All winners had won over at least 2400 metres (two had won over 3200 metres previously)

Nine of the last 10 winners carried no more than 55 kilograms

Nine of the last 10 winners finished top four at their last start

Eight of the last 10 winners were aged four to six (based on Southern Hemisphere breeding)

Eight of the last 10 winners were bred outside of Australia

We are taking some comfort from the above (we will take any positive - LOL)

Oceanex has won at Group 2 level

Oceanex has won at 2400 metres and 2800 metres

Oceanex will carry 51.5 kilograms

Oceanex finished third at her last start in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Cup

Oceanex is a five-year-old

Oceanex is a New Zealand bred mare

Glenfiddich

Well things did not plan out the way we were hoping, or should we say wishing, as we knew it was a gigantic task to have Glenfiddich to drop back to 1200 metres against the best 3YO sprinters in Australia. As trainer Peter Moody said, “it was worth a throw at the stumps” given the Coolmore is a stallion making race. The pleasing thing is he came through the run well and will now head to the paddock.

We will always have the “what if” moment when we look back on this campaign – “what if” he did run in the $2 million Caulfield Guineas, the race over 1600 metres that he was set for and had to be scratched the week of the race. Peter Moody and Luke Nolan were beaming with confidence that he could win. To also think that Glenfiddich finished in front of eventual winner of the Guineas, Ole Kirk, when he ran second in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes earlier in the year. And, to think if he had won or ran well, he would have started in the Cox Plate – what a thrill that would have been to have a runner in the Cox Plate.

Anyway, we are very proud Glenfiddich and hope he can win that Group 1 he deserves in the Autumn. Bruce Saxild

Rider In the Snow to debut tomorrow

Our European stayer Rider In The Snow will make his Australian debut tomorrow at Rosehill. He will run first-up over 1900 metres.

Trainer Kris Lees believes it is a good starting point for him. We are not expecting too much as his form in Europe is over further – hopefully, he will be our 2021 Melbourne Cup runner!

The Flemington Spring Carnival week commences tomorrow, and we are very lucky to be part owners in two horses competing. Tomorrow our exciting 3YO Fastnet Rock c**t, Glenfiddich, will line up in the stallion making $1.5 million Group 1 Coolmore Stakes over 1200 metres.

If he wins, it would be an extraordinary effort giving that he was being prepared for the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas over 1600 metres and then on to the Group 1 Cox Plate over 2040 metres, before he had to be scratched from the Guineas four days out from the race and undertake a minor throat operation.

So to drop back to 1200 metres is a big task, but trainer Peter Moody believes he is a high-quality c**t and deserves his chance to go around. He is unloved by the racing media leading into the race due to the above, but you have to be in it to win it, and Peter is not taking him to the races just to make up the numbers.

Our other runner Oceanex will line up in the $8 million Group 1 Melbourne Cup on Tuesday. What a thrill to have another runner in the Cup. We had Au Revoir run in the 2014 Cup finishing 8th after racing three and four wide for most of the race.
Oceanex goes into the race as an outsider in what the racing media are saying is one of the best Cup fields for many years – just our luck! We will enjoy the incredible experience and be proud of her no matter where she finishes.

Good luck to our partners.

Go Glen!

Good luck to all our partners in Glenfiddich tonight when he runs in the Group 2 Stutt Stakes over 1600 metres at Moonee Valley. He was very brave taking on the older horses in the Group 1 Menzies Stakes when running third to Behemoth at his first start this campaign.

Peter Moody is very happy with him - we just need the rain to stay away.

An exciting day for OZ Racing. We are lucky enough to be in the ownership of Oceanex, who will commence her Melbourne Cup campaign when she starts in a 1400 metre handicap at Caulfield.

We are also in the ownership of the Group 1 placed 3YO Glenfiddich who will be lining up in the Group 1 Menzies Stakes against the older horses. Trainer Peter Moody is throwing him into the deep end here - a 3YO hasn't run in this race for 33 years and 45 years since a 3YO won the race.

You have to be in it to win it!
