Who is representing your business today?

Using subcontractors is a great way to scale your business and take on bigger jobs. But remember, the client does not care if the guy on site is a direct employee or a subbie.

If your subbie turns up late, leaves a mess, or does a dodgy job, it is your logo that takes the hit.

You need to vet your contractors just as hard as your full time staff.

Set clear expectations before they start, check their work regularly, and pay them on time if you want to keep the good ones around.

Your client probably does not understand the technical skill it took to run that new wiring or install that pipe. But they absolutely understand if you left muddy boot prints on their floor and dust all over their kitchen bench.

The easiest way to get glowing five star reviews and word of mouth referrals is to leave the site cleaner than you found it.

Carry a small vacuum in the van, lay down drop sheets every single time, and spend the last ten minutes of the day cleaning up. Professionalism wins you the next job.

You have already spent the time and fuel driving to the site. The absolute best time to win more work is when you are already standing in the client's home.

Train yourself (and your crew) to look for the "while I am here" opportunities.

If you are an electrician changing a light fitting, check the smoke alarms.

If you are a plumber fixing a leak, check the water pressure.

Simply asking, "I noticed this issue while I was working, would you like me to fix it right now?" is a massive value add for the client and instant extra cash for you.

Being flat out does not mean you are making money. There is a massive difference between being busy and being profitable.

You can work seven days a week, have a calendar booked out for three months, and still struggle to pay your bills. If you are pricing jobs just to win them, you are simply buying yourself exhausting work.

Take a hard look at your margins this week. Calculate exactly what it costs to run your ute, pay your insurances, and cover your own wage.

If a job does not meet your minimum profit margin, pass it to someone else. Stop glorifying being busy and start focusing on being profitable.

Being a business owner does not mean you have to be available twenty four hours a day.

If a client texts you at 8 PM on a Friday or calls you on a Sunday morning, you do not have to answer it. In fact, answering it trains them to expect that level of access all the time.

Set up an automated text response for your weekends letting them know your business hours and telling them you will call them back on Monday morning.

Enjoy your weekend. The job will still be there tomorrow.

Tool theft is a massive problem for Tradies and, despite what people say, it doesn't only happen in certain suburbs.

Losing your gear does not just cost you the price of the tools, it costs you days of lost work while you try to replace everything, and the stress of knowing that has a flow on effect for all your customers.

Do not be the easy target.

1️⃣ Park your van backed up against a wall whenever possible.

2️⃣ Engrave your ABN onto your expensive tools (and the batteries that go with them).

3️⃣ Throw an AirTag or siumilar device in with your main kit.

4️⃣ Check that your insurance actually covers tools left in a vehicle overnight.

Everyone is complaining about the skills shortage, but we need to look at how we are treating the next generation.

If you treat your apprentice strictly as cheap labour to sweep the floors and fetch coffees, they are going to leave the second a better offer comes along. You need to treat them like an investment.

Take the time to actually explain why you are doing a task a certain way. Give them small responsibilities. Praise them when they get it right. Build an asset, do not just rent a broom pusher.

Not all money is good money. Taking on a toxic client will cost you more in time, stress, and unpaid invoices than the job is actually worth.

If you hear any of these phrases during a site visit, you might want to politely decline the job:

🚩"The last three guys I hired were terrible." (You will be number four).

🚩"Can you just do it for cash to make it cheaper?" (They do not value your legitimate business costs).

🚩"It is only a quick five minute job, it should not cost much." (They are already trying to manage your time).

Protect your peace and your profit margins. Learn to say no to "red flag" customers.
