Just back from a heritage survey in the WA Goldfields, north of Leinster. Hot during the day (38, 41 and 40 celcius) and then the afternoon build-up and thunderstorms late afternoon/early evening. Noted the wind-turbines being installed on the edge of Lake Miranda. The flight home was delayed by 2 hours thanks to the storm in Perth.

This week, thanks to Tjiwal Aboriginal Corporation, I had the chance to return to Kathleen Valley, the scene of my first solo fieldtrip for the Department of Aboriginal Sites way back in March 1993. On that trip we visited some 75 places of cultural heritage significance and documented information regarding the significant Dreaming Tracks which pass through the area. This I accompanied members of the Tjiwal Native Title holding group on surveys of a proposed sand quarry, and some places of significance which will be impacted by a Lithium Mine.

Subsea7 have announced they are abandoning the development of their proposed Pipeline Fabrication Facility at Learmonth. The project proposed constructing sections of pipeline on-shore, which are then floated in bundles to off-shore gas platforms. The project involved construction of a 900m long workshop and a twin railtrack running 11km into Exmouth Gulf. SJCHC were slated to be monitoring excavations for archaeological features and objects. Although not good for our business, or for local people hoping for jobs, it is good news as far as its environmental and social surrounds impacts are concerned.
