Well, 2023 was certainly a big year for me! Grange HR turned ‘Sweet 16’ and I think fate aligned the stars to open my next chapter in life. After 32 years, I decided to retire from the HR profession and close my HR consultancy business mid last year after 16 amazing years.

Instead, I'll be pursuing my interests in art and design, travel, and organic gardening, among a whole lot of other things – the bucket list is long. And yes….quite possibly more free-range chooks in the future, for those who know me well!

I commenced my HR career in 1991 working for some international hotel chains before establishing Grange HR Consulting in 2007 as the Founding Director, after realising a need for external HR support and advice for businesses in the Geelong area. We moved to the Sunshine Coast in 2018 and the business continued to grow.

We specialised in Organisational Development, HR Management, Leadership and Team Development consultancy services, and had the opportunity to work with terrific clients locally, throughout Australia and overseas.

To my clients…what can I say in just a few lines! I’ve had many conversations with them over the past 6 months as we closed and wrapped up loose ends. Thank you for being part of our journey and being our go-to for HR support and advice. We appreciate the trust all of our clients put in us to deliver on their needs, and welcoming us into their spaces. It made for an exceptional experience as a small business owner, and one I’ll never forget.

And the final but most heartfelt words go to a few people; my wonderful husband Matt who supported my endeavours every day in running a successful business, and encouraged random wine o’clocks at just the right time so I could close up my home-based office for the day; and my dear family in Geelong who may be a distance from where we now live in the Noosa Hinterland, but also inspired me to follow my dream.

Thank you all… signing off from Grange HR for the last time, Tammy 🥂

Leadership has been the hot topic with our clients so far this year - coming out of a few unsettled years and realising that the employee experience is a major key to retention and happy employees. If you're a leader - do you provide the space for great things happen? We love this sketch from QAspire!

Recruitment - What might we see in 2023? It appears businesses may be upskilling existing staff and cost-cutting, trying to avoid any impact of a potential recession. Some trends include:
• Filling vacant roles and maintaining headcount, not adding new jobs to the business.
• Engaging contractors for flexibility, to avoid the longer-term commitment of hiring employees.
• Benchmarking salary/wages regularly to ensure alignment with market expectations, affected by the higher cost of living.
• Being prepared for a job candidate’s expectations for flexible working arrangements.
• Understanding that candidates want job security and to work for a business more likely to perform well in the market.
• Focusing on developing people and promoting internally rather than adding extra employees to the team.
• Considering that a job candidate might be looking for a business with values aligned to their own values.
• Engaging cybersecurity expertise and talent.

Internal promotions, hiring freezes and prioritising cybersecurity skills are among the eight key hiring trends that are set to shape the talent market in 2023.

Building a Great Team > Leaders and Managers - don’t wait until it’s too late to have a conversation with your team. Important 5 points to consider and talk about:

> Does the person feel their job has a purpose?
> How does the person want to develop, learn and grow at work?
> Are you providing the right resources, tools and support?
> Have you provided an opportunity for the person to do their best?
> What can the business do better overall?

Don’t wait until their exit interview to find out what they really think.

Changes to Superannuation - 1st November 2021

A significant change to superannuation comes into effect from today. Informally named ‘superannuation stapling’, an employee’s superannuation fund will now be attached to them and when changing employment, the superannuation fund arrangements will follow.

This will reduce incidences of people having duplicate accounts, paying management fees for more than one fund, potentially overlapping insurance fees and having their retirement savings slowly disappear as they may have lost track of their multiple funds.

Employers must now identify whether an employee has an existing super fund they need to contribute to. If new employees don’t provide details of their existing super fund, the employer must contact the ATO instead of choosing their business’ default fund.

'Superannuation stapling' and a minimum wage increase for some awards come into effect from today, 1 November. Here’s what HR needs to know.

Stage 3 Award wage increases apply from today, 1st November for 21 modern Awards. Refer to the Fair Work web page https://www.fairwork.gov.au/newsroom/news/annual-wage-review-2021 under ‘November 2021 award increase’ to determine if you have been affected.

If you are employed under any of these Awards, or an employer who employs people under the Awards, then the increases take effect from the first full pay period starting on or after 1st November.

To obtain the new pay rates, view all the pay guides here https://www.fairwork.gov.au/pay-and-wages/minimum-wages/pay-guides
