Love seafood? Help give back to the ocean 🦪🌊

Heading to the Sea to Shore Seafood Festival in Glenelg this week? Keep an eye out for shell recycling bins and help restore South Australia’s local reefs.

Used oyster, mussel and scallop shells collected at the festival will help rebuild vital marine habitats through local reef restoration projects led by OzFish.

It’s a simple way to reduce waste, support marine life and help bring our coastal ecosystems back to life. How good is that?

Fishing restrictions on selected species will change from 1 May as South Australia continues to recover.

The new restrictions are needed to help populations like southern calamari, King George whiting, and garfish recover.

Fishing restrictions on several popular species will come into effect on May 1 to help populations recover.

A total closure will be implemented for southern calamari across both gulfs for commercial, recreational and charter boat fishing.

A recreational and charter boat closure will be implemented for garfish in Gulf St Vincent, which is already subject to a commercial closure.

And a spawning closure will be implemented for King George whiting across areas of both gulfs.

FACTS ABOUT SQUID: (calamari) Most squid don’t live very long at all typically 1 year. Some smaller species only make it a few months, while a few larger deep-sea squid can live a bit longer. Their lives are fast-paced: they grow quickly, hunt constantly, and reach maturity in a short time

One of the most fascinating aspects of squid life is how it ends. After reproducing:
• Females often guard their eggs, sometimes stopping feeding altogether.
• Many squid die shortly after mating or after their eggs hatch.

This life strategy called semelparity means they put everything into one final act of creating the next generation Short but intense lifespans.
