Remembrance Day is a poignant reminder of the courage and selflessness of those who have given their lives for the freedom and peace we cherish today.

It is our duty to ensure that their sacrifices are never forgotten, and I encourage all South Australians to find a way to meaningfully commemorate Remembrance Day.

I was fortunate to spend time with Berni White yesterday.

As a former paratrooper and commanding officer of 16 Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery, Berni deployed to East Timor in 1999, Iraq in 2006, and Afghanistan in 2007, had a four-year-stint as the Military Attaché and a senior accredited Diplomat to the United States, before concluding his service as Military Advisor to the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Su***de Taskforce.

Berni talked to me about his family's proud history of military service, and some of the challenges facing contemporary veterans. You can read more about Berni's story in today's edition of The Advertiser.

To all current and former serving personnel, and their families: thank you for your service.

Lest we forget.

PORT PIRIE'S MILITARY HISTORY BROUGHT TO LIFE IN NEW MURAL DURING SALA FESTIVAL

We are thrilled to announce a captivating commemorative project that will breathe life into the military history of the region.

South Australian artist Sam Brooks, renowned for his extensive portfolio of public art, has partnered with his assistant Mark Harding to create a stunning mural on the side of the last remaining WW2 Belmont Hangar at Port Pirie Aerodrome.

Port Pirie Aerodrome served as a crucial hub during World War II, extensively utilised as a bombing and gunnery training school due to its ideal weather conditions and flat terrain. The mural, a testament to this rich heritage, aims to encapsulate the spirit of the time and pay tribute to those who served and lost their lives.

The mural is a joint initiative supported by Port Pirie Regional Council and the Department of Veterans’ Affairs which holds a deep historical significance.

Work has started on the new lift at the Northern Festival Centre!!

You will see lots of changes when you visit the venue over the next 4-5 months.

Please allow extra time and look for signage when attending a show or movie as construction will limit space in our foyer.

Our friendly staff will be on hand to help.

The “Weeroona Island Whale” will soon become part of the South Australian Museum’s collection for future research.

Museum collection manager of mammals Mr David Stemmer said that the bones were drying for storage after months in the site's 2500-litre heated macerating tanks at 35C.

The deceased creature washed ashore at Weeroona Island on Monday, March 6, and was transported to Adelaide on Tuesday afternoon.

Mr Stemmer said it was very exciting for staff to receive the 5.7 metre long animal and they appreciated the District Council of Mount Remarkable's effort to bring it to Adelaide.
