If your vision is blurry and distorted no matter how many times your glasses get changed, there may be a reason the glasses aren't fixing it.

One possibility is keratoconus, a condition where the cornea gradually changes shape, bulging into a cone.

Ordinary glasses can only do so much for it, which is why it so often goes under-recognised. What actually helps is mapping the cornea's shape precisely with corneal topography, then fitting specialty or scleral contact lenses that restore clear, comfortable vision.

Industry best practice points to exactly this kind of specialist fitting and it's something we do right here, rather than sending you to the city for it.

Following along? Give us a follow for more on the conditions we manage locally and ask us if this sounds familiar.

Ever wondered what actually goes on between appointments at your local eye clinic?

We're not discussing KPIs or coming up with strategies to upsell you things you don't need.

We're reviewing your notes and looking at how we can provide you with the right support for your eye health needs - so that when you walk through the door, you don't have to explain your medical history, again.

Some days we're ordering that contact lens with the complex script because your previous optometrist said it wasn't available in Hedland. Some days we're picking up something on a scan that matters, and quietly grateful we caught it early. Most days it's simply taking the time to properly understand what's going on with someone's eyes.

That's the difference a permanent, local practice makes. We're not passing through - this is our community too.

Come behind the scenes with us, and drop us a hello in the comments if we've seen you in the chair.

The most valuable thing your optometrist has isn't a machine. It's your history.

A single snapshot of your eyes tells us how they look today. But the real power is in comparison - this year against last, and the year before that. A subtle change that means nothing on its own can mean everything when we can see it developing over time.

That only works if the same practice is holding your records year after year. It's the quiet advantage of a permanent, local practice over a service that comes and goes: we don't just see your eyes, we know their story.

If you want that kind of continuity looking after your family's eyes, give us a follow and feel free to refer us to your family and friends who are due for an eye exam.

Guilty of Googling your symptoms before booking an appointment?

We get it - we do it too 😜 but don't tell anyone!

Rather than rely on AI to give you a vague answer we decided to tackle some of the more interesting questions asked on Google in our new 'Google vs Optometrist' series - and the first question is: why does my eye twitch?

Got your own burning optical question or myth you'd love busted? Drop it in the comments or send us a DM and we'll get Byron to answer it for you!

Most people choose sunglasses on price and how they look. Out here, that's the wrong order.

In a place with UV this extreme, your sunglasses are protective equipment first and a style choice second, and the two aren't mutually exclusive if you know what to look for. The Cancer Council's advice is clear: the lens needs to genuinely block UV, and a good shape stops light sneaking in around the edges.

Swipe through for the five-second checklist we'd run before buying any pair, so you can tell protection from decoration.

Save it for your next pair and come try a few on with us when you're ready.

Here's the thing that catches people out: your eyes can feel completely fine while something changes quietly in the background. Many of the conditions we look for have no early symptoms at all - which is exactly why regular checks matter, even when nothing seems wrong. It's recommended to have your eyes examined every two years, instead of when you notice a problem.

If it's been more than a couple of years - or you genuinely can't remember - book a comprehensive exam with your local, independent optometrist. It's 40 minutes that will change how you see eye health.

Book online at www.hedlandeyecare.com.au/booking or call us on 9163 3711.

Just moved to Port Hedland? Sorting your eye care here is easier than you might expect.

Settling into a new town means finding all your people again: a GP, a dentist, somewhere to get the car serviced. Your optometrist belongs on that list, and we'd love to be it.

We're a locally owned, independent practice on Edgar Street, with the diagnostic technology to look after your whole family's eyes properly - from first pairs of glasses to ongoing condition monitoring. New patients are always welcome, and getting started is simple.

A sudden shower of new floaters, flashes of light, or a dark shadow creeping across your vision? That's a "today" problem, not a "next week" one.

Symptoms like these can be harmless, but they can also be the warning signs of a retinal tear or detachment, which needs prompt attention to protect your sight.

The difference between a good outcome and a lasting one often comes down to how quickly it's seen.

So here's the rule worth remembering: a sudden change like this means get your eyes checked straight away. Call us on 9163 3711, and if it's outside our hours, seek urgent medical care.

This scan sees through the layers of your eye - without ever touching it.

An OCT works a bit like ultrasound, but with light instead of sound. In a few seconds it builds a detailed cross-section of your retina, layer by layer, so we can see structures far beneath the surface that no standard eye check could ever reach.

No dye. No discomfort. Just a remarkably detailed look at the health of your eye - and a baseline we can compare against for years to come.

It's exactly the kind of technology people assume lives in a city clinic. It lives here. Follow along as we walk through the rest of our tech over the coming weeks.

On a Pilbara worksite, your eyes cop it from every direction: dust, glare, flying debris and that high UV.

It's Tradies National Health Month and there's one message you need to remember: eye injuries are among the most common workplace injuries in Australia, and Safe Work Australia notes most are preventable with the right protection.

The right protection means eyewear that blocks UV, fits properly and for some, that's the right prescription - not a scratched pair that's out of date and doesn't let you see clearly on site 😉

We fit prescription safety eyewear and proper UV-rated lenses built for the conditions out here. And if something does get in your eye on site, you don't need to wait in ED for 3 hours.

We can assess and remove foreign bodies right here at Edgar Street.
