Our Rail Infrastructure trainees from Newman Senior High School participated in their TLIB2092 Operate minor mechanical equipment practical assessments today and gained hands-on experience using a rail saw, and they did really well!

Rail saws are specialised cutting tools used to cut and remove sections of railway track during maintenance, repair and upgrade works. Learning to safely operate this equipment is an important part of developing practical rail industry skills, with a strong focus on safe work practice and correct handling techniques.

Having now completed their initial training, the students will return to their workplace placement at BHP Western Australia where they can begin applying these skills under supervision in an operational rail environment. This provides valuable exposure to real-world rail maintenance activities while continuing to build their competence, confidence and industry experience.

Congratulations to one of our Certificate II in Rail Infrastructure School-Based Trainees, Adam, on being selected as a finalist in the 2026 WA Training Awards for WA School-Based Apprentice of the Year.

Adam was also recognised as Apprentice/Trainee of the Year at the Port Hedland Chamber of Commerce Industry Business Excellence Awards in June.

A big thank you to Category 5 Labour Management and BHP Western Australia for the support, leadership, guidance and mentoring they have provided throughout Adam's traineeship. We would also like to acknowledge our trainers for their ongoing commitment to delivering quality training and assessment, helping our trainees develop the skills and confidence needed for a successful career in the rail industry.

We would also like to extend our thanks to Hedland Senior High School for the fantastic VET program they deliver and for their ongoing coordination and support of school-based traineeships. Partnerships like these play a vital role in creating meaningful pathways from school into industry.

Congratulations, Adam, on these outstanding achievements. We wish you all the best for the WA Training Awards in September and look forward to seeing what the future holds for you. Well done!

- TLIW3015 Weld rail using the aluminothermic welding process
- TLIW0006 Heat and cut materials using oxy-LPG equipment for the rail industry
- TLIW0004 Grind rails

The program includes 5 days of face-to-face training, followed by on-the-job assessment to support competency in a workplace environment.

This course is suitable for individuals with existing industry experience who are seeking to formalise their skills and progress within the rail sector.

Course fee: $2,000 per participant.
