It's unmistakably that time of the year when activity goes hyper as everyone preps for the holidays and rushes to the shops. It's also a great time of the year to grab a beverage, a quiet spot and take a few minutes to reflect on the year. What went well, what could have gone better, what's no longer of value to keep doing, and what's a more inspired direction to follow? These questions can give you moments of clarity to refresh your plans and step into 2023 with a renewed outlook. Operating from a knee-jerk, responsive mode has been essential as we pivoted to outside events in recent years but it's not a long-term option to put us in the best position to grow. Jot some thoughts down as you ponder 2022 and take time over the next couple of weeks to flesh those ideas into actionable steps to springboard your way into the new year.

We are in an unheralded time to be able to take charge of our own learning and development.

So long as you have adequate internet ( a challenge for many lately with the exponential usage rates right now) you can learn anything from how to do a handstand to get fit to build your work skills to learn a new language. Hobbies, crafts, fitness, absurdities and practical skills - sooooo much is available online and more is coming to you.

From initially being laid-back about the lockdown, people are now starting to be more proactive and direct their own learning.

You can choose from many live streams through to online formal classes to classes on YouTube.

Just decide what it is you want to learn then do a search for that skill and add "+classes" and you'll be amazed at what you can find.

Start with some free sessions to see if you like the style of teaching before you fork out for any paid lessons. And be sure to check the credentials of the person giving the lessons.

These past two days I've been learning from the inimitable Jane Anderson about a great method to create ongoing material for my sites.

Last week I sat in on an all-day series of classes with Dale Beaumont to learn what can be done to handle the current crisis and continue to serve people.

The lessons and courses and material are out there: get clear on what you want and go do it while you have the enforced available time to upskill.

Now, for balance I need to go find some ukelele lessons to improve my play :)

Learning challenges present themselves at any time. Right now, there is a new set of complications around them. Remote learning is no longer an option but mandatory.

Here's how one area is handling it:

Tinukwa Boulder, director of innovative technologies and online learning in Pitt’s School of Education, says that emphasizing mindfulness and establishing a social presence in the virtual classroom are key to making online learning easier.

Who'd have thought we'd be having to learn how to wash our hands? But there is a specific way to do it now to break the shell of this pesky virus that is rampaging. Passing our hands under water isn't enough. Be thorough and hopefully do it under warm/hot water.
