BUDGET 2026

Trusts to be taxed at 30%. This is set to come into effect from 1 July 2028.

Small businesses will be able to look at restructuring from 1 July 2027.

Thoughts? Trusts have long been a useful investment and business vehicle. Looks like those days are now numbered!

The federal budget features important changes to how trusts are taxed. Here's what you need to know.

BUDGET 2026

Changes to Capital Gains Tax that are going to take a minute (and possibly a stiff drink) to process.

The 50% discount on capital gains will cease on 1 July 2027.

Capital gains made after 1 July 2027 will be subject to an inflation indexation. This means investment owners (particularly property) will need to strongly consider getting a valuation on their property at 30th June 2027 (gains made up to that date will be eligible for the 50% discount. Gains after that date are subject to the indexation approach). It means Real Estate Agents will either be rubbing their hands at the opportunity for extra valuations, or crying into the coffee cups at the thought of all the extra work. And for accountants, it means we’re dusting off decades old text books to rehash what the bloody hell CGT Indexation is 🤦🏼‍♀️🍷

All capital gains will be taxed AT LEAST 30% from 1 July 2027. This essentially means that anyone making a capital gain when their income was lower, will still pay tax at a minimum rate of 30% (no tax free threshold or lower marginal tax rates).

And in the final kick, assets purchased prior to 1985 will be subject to Capital Gains Tax from 1 July 2027.

Thoughts? Wow! The Annual Accountants Conference will be wild this year as we get a handle on this bad boy

Most investors selling property, shares and other assets will pay more tax once the new model to index the cost base of an asset to inflation is bedded down.

BUDGET 2026

A HUGE change to negative gearing.

Any properties purchased after 7:30pm on 12 May 2026, WILL NOT be eligible for negative gearing.

New builds will be eligible for negative gearing from 1 July 2027.

Any existing investment properties will continue to be eligible for negative gearing.

Thoughts? Wowsers! We had hints this was coming, but this still hits hard (and fast). One theory is that it will allow more first home buyers into the market as there won’t be as many investors buying properties. Only time will tell! We’d love to know your thoughts

BUDGET 2026

The government has proposed a $250 tax offset to commence…1 July 2027.

This offset will only be available to ‘working Australians’ (those who declare a wage).

Thoughts? We can’t help but think it’s an insignificant amount which won’t be noticed, and doesn’t kick in for essentially 2 years. No immediate relief

Labor will raise taxes on investment properties and some trust funds, giving the revenue back to workers with a new $250 tax break unveiled in the federal budget.
