Jeff from CR Kennedy caught up with Darlo at Liebherr Dig Day in Baldivis. Darlo has been running the six-way blade Liebherr PR 736 with a mastless 3D machine control setup through the factory interface. It’s the first one CR Kennedy has done in Australia.

Darlo’s verdict after a week of site prep:
- Very impressive, from the install right through to the screen
- The hardware is tucked into the machine’s own compartments
- Intuitive and easy to use

Three buttons and away you go 🫪

We caught up with Darlo at Liebherr Dig Day in Baldivis to ask what he actually rates about running Leica MC1 on these machines.

His picks:
- The components are built into the machine, well hidden and protected, so it all feels seamless
- Setting a plane is quick. Flat or sloped, it’s three buttons. No scrolling through screens and no deleting old programs
- Basic 2D and 3D were a lifesaver for getting today’s level pads right

Tip 354 - Did you know your Rugby 640 can be used on its side?!

Here’s the trick that earns its keep on windy days 🍃

Tip it onto its vertical axis, drop it into the Leica bracket, and you can set out your working points across the site without using a string line.

Extremely useful on windy days!

One thing to know: on its side it won’t self-level, so you need to override it. Hit the red button so that X and Y LEDs show double red.

From there use the remote to adjust the angle of the beam and have the laser line up with your end point.

Once you’ve set out a job this way you won’t go back to string lines on windy days

My pick for the best all-round laser for a construction operator is the Leica Rugby 640.

It comes in two beam colours and there’s a reason for that.

Green is the one you want for internal work, it’s easier to see indoors.

Red is better once you’re outside, longer range & handles the heat and cold better out in the elements.

The bit that makes it though is the remote.

When you’re working away from the unit you’re not walking back to the unit every time. From where you’re standing you can dial in your slope, change the rotation speed, or isolate a single window to throw the beam right where you need it and avoid those WINDOWS! 😤😡

For general construction, levelling, alignment, slope work, it’s hard to go past. It does the lot 🙏🫪

No screen on the Rugby 620, so how do you actually know what grade you’re on? 🤔

You don’t. And that’s fine, because this laser is built to work off two working points instead.

Take the slope coming down off this driveway. Set your reference at the top, work back towards your second point, and check your axis is running the right direction, if it’s not, rotate it to line up in the direction you want your slope. From there you’ll pull a clean, consistent fall from point A down to point B every time.

Simple gear, done properly. That’s the whole idea 👌
