Maureen Davidson & Julian Walker from Pound Creek Rural Fire Brigade had a chat about fire safety in winter.

The following points are the chat in a nutshell:

1. Get your flues and chimneys checked by a certified technician;
2. Switch off or extinguish heaters before leaving home or going to bed;
3. Keep drying clothes or curtains at least a metre from a heating source;
4. Check all heaters before winter – especially gas and electric heaters.
5. And, make sure your smoke alarms are working and that the whole household is up to speed with the Home Fire Escape Plan.

Stay fire safe this winter.

Virtual Reality has arrived at Pound Creek Rural Fire Brigade. Members of Pound Creek and Tarwin Lower have had the opportunity to put on the VR goggles and tackle a virtual fire with a virtual hose branch.
Felt pretty real with the goggles on, that's for sure.

Monday 4th May, a day on which we recognise the valuable work of firefighters worldwide. The job is often dangerous and nearly always dirty and demanding. The recognition must also extend to the personnel whose task is to support firefighters. These people have a key role to play.
Monday 4th May, reach out to firefighters and support staff, both volunteers and salaried, and say thank you for the job they do. Your appreciation is sure to be warmly received.

Yes, I know it's now Easter Monday, but this is too important to ignore.
If you've tested your smoke alarms and changed batteries as need, GREAT!!
If you haven't, now is the time to do this vital task. Having a working smoke alarm can SAVE YOUR LIFE and the lives of your loved ones if your house catches on fire.

AUTUMN 2026 - STATE OF VICTORIA
Areas marked red on the map indicate the likelihood of an increased number of significant bushfires occurring in autumn, compared to an average risk of fire.

This map identifies areas of increased risk of bushfire, in comparison to areas of usual risk of bushfire. It is not intended as a prediction of where and when bushfires will occur.

Both Central and West & South Gippsland districts are within the area marked red.

Autumn 2026

The AFAC Seasonal Bushfire Outlook for autumn 2026 identifies a heightened risk of bushfire in New South Wales (NSW), Victoria and Western Australia (WA).
Increased risk of fire in autumn has been identified for regions in southern, central, and eastern NSW, large parts of Victoria, extending to parts of southeast South Australia.
Also at risk are parts of southern WA.
AFAC CEO Rob Webb said: "The increased bushfire risk is driven by increased long term dryness and persistent soil moisture deficits."
"For many parts of southern Australia, autumn sees the gradual reduction in fire risk and opportunities for prescribed burning can increase. However, these programs may be delayed in some areas because of the underlying conditions."
"This is a three-month outlook. Even with the anticipated rains in the southeast in the short term, much more would be required to overcome the long-term moisture deficits."
