Some great early results from Richmond 220339 in the yearling assessment of the SA 2025 drop sire evaluation.
Trait leader in flock breeding values for.
* Post weaning weight
* Eye muscle
* Fat depth
* Fibre diameter
* Multiple breech traits including Breech cover, Breech wrinkle, least dag & least urine stain
* Sustainable merino index
* Merino lamb index
* % Tops visually classed

220339 was purchased by Pepper Well merino stud at our on property auction for $14,000 and we retained semen for our own use.
Originally identified as a potential sire for his combination of balanced wool and meat production, stud quality fibre, great body shape and breech traits his first drop of lambs performed well at last years auction and we look forward to a similar result in this year's draft.

Carl Holschier contacted us the other day to update me on his exceptional ewe lamb scanning results from his family's "Paringavale" flock. Joined in February at 8 months of age and scanning at 130% its quite possible they could wean at over 100% on joining numbers. It's not long ago that these sort of figures in merino lambs would be considered impossible. A brilliant result for the Holschier family and a credit to their excellent management.

Pleasing scanning results in a tight year with all stud ewes including a big ratio of maidens scanning 150%.

Every year I become increasingly confident that our carcass breeding values are taking us in the right direction. Providing that data quality remains good I don't see any reason why this should change.

We've been very lucky with the ewes in terrific order after a great early start to Autumn but starting to look for rain now. Shaping up well for some good conception rates at scanning.

THE PRODUCTION v EFFICIENCY CONUNDRUM.
There's nearly always some degree of genetic compromise when trying to move wool and carcass forward simultaneously on the same level of nutrition.
It makes sense that there's only so much energy that can be distributed to multiple areas of production from every mouthful of feed.
So when we do breed animals that are trait leaders for both fibre and meat does it mean that they are simply eating more than their peers? Is there a point or a "sweet spot" where maximum production is achieved without significantly increasing feed intake and if we do continue to lift production in multiple areas are we simply cancelling out our gains through lower stocking rates?
I'd love to hear your thoughts.

EWE LAMB JOINING
These are the exceptional July drop ewe lambs from the Holschier family's "Paringavale" flock that I classed yesterday.
Run on Faba bean stubble over the summer with no other supplementary feed the lead of their brothers run in the same mob weighed between 55 and 60 kg. These girls would easily average early to mid 50's.
The Holschier's have been joining ewe lambs for many years and last year they marked an amazing 83% on joining numbers. With this year's lambs in better condition they are hoping for a 90% marking rate.
An incredible effort considering many merino breeders would struggle to achieve these numbers in adult ewes.

CLASSING STUD EWES INTO JOINING MOBS.
Every year stud ewes are matched with sires that will complement their strengths and correct weaknesses. We do this by combining an assessment of both the animals breeding values to drive production and an assessment of visual traits such as wool type, (nourishment, softness, length etc ) and physical phenotype to maintain the quality and eveness of fibre, skin and confirmation.

There must be something brewing.
The Rosewoods greened up a few weeks before the recent 35mm but they're still as green as ever. Always a good sign.
