TMEC - Board of Directors quarterly meeting held in the Underground Crib Room
Mt Lyell has been a member of the Tasmanian Minerals and Energy Council (TMEC) since the Council was formed in the mid 1990's with General Managers traditionally serving as Directors on the Board. GM Clint Mayes has been on the Board since moving to care and maintenance in 2014.
TMEC is the peak body for mining, minerals processing, energy and manufacturing in Tasmania.
The Board of TMEC holds its quarterly meeting of Directors at various member sites around the state providing an opportunity for members to better understand the business challenges, the regulatory environment and the communities which the member both relies on and supports. Find out more at www.tmec.com.au
CMT invited Board of TMEC to hold their first meeting of 2026 in our underground crib room so they could best experience the underground working environment they had heard so much about over the years. The members were delighted with this opportunity and were very enthusiastic about meeting in such a unique and culturally significant location for the mining industry of the country.
While some challenges were anticipated in providing even a minimal level of comfort and reliable IT access for the meeting, the event went well for all who attended.
Considering there would be none of the usual corporate comforts, as could be provided by other venues, the site team were well prepared, utilising all resources available, allowing the meeting to proceed without issue. A fabulous Thai lunch was catered for by our local Mimso Kitchen and arrived on site hot and ready to serve - quite an unexpected treat for our visitors.
Of course, the company paparazzi were also on hand to record the event, and the selection of snaps below show a relaxed Board in an environment they were, surprisingly, quite comfortable with.
Thankyou to the Board of TMEC, Mimso Kitchen and to the site support team, for making this first meeting of 2026 a very memorable occasion for everyone.

The day of December 4th is St Barbara’s Day, the Patron Saint of Miners, and thus was the date chosen to re-dedicate the Mt Lyell Memorial Monument – and, after 3 long wet months the rain stopped and the sun shone, we gathered to remember those who went to work on this site and never returned home.
The service was conducted by Mrs Shirley Scolyer, UCA Community Chaplain, with floral tributes laid by Robert Butterfield for Sibanye Stillwater Mt Lyell and by miner’s families in attendance. Andrew Bell played Amazing Grace on bagpipes while the gathering reflected quietly on those workers who are named on the monument and also those lost across the many decades since work began on this site in the 1880’s.
The monument is open to the community to place a tribute or to spend a quiet moment with those workmates who never made it home. We will forever remember them.

Forged from the old copper roofing gutters salvaged from Mt Lyell’s 670 level Changehouse, The Copper Flannelette Shirt by David “Fitzy” Fitzpatrick honours the human element of the site’s incredible mining heritage.
The creative piece reflects the enduring connection between the miners and their ‘flannie’ – a timeless symbol of resilience and community.

Helena Demczuk recently completed a series of en plein air studies at West Lyell for the Art Trail Unconformity Festival exhibition at the Western Art Space in Hunter street . During site visits across the winter months of August and September, supported by Andrew “Bomber” Shea, Helena explored what she explains as “the interplay of people, landscape and the colour that unites them”. This work of the old portal at West Lyell symbolises a once busy workplace now layered within the colours and altered landscape of the scene.

On the edge of Queenstown, alongside the charged waters of the Queen River, rises one of the West Coast’s most distinctive landmarks: the slag heap. Neither mountain nor monument, the black heap is stubbornly sprouting, draped with a fragile community of trees in early stages of regrowth.

This year, our festival turns to this landmark as a site of inspiration. The rhythm of coexistence here – boom and bust, extraction and regrowth, tradition and experimentation – leaves an unmistakable trace that we live alongside.

This year's branding was a true festival collaboration, and we were thrilled to work with design partner Neon Jungle, alongside LUSY Productions, Jonny Scholes, and local mine worker and photographer Andrew "Bomber” Shea. With special access to the site provided by Sibanye-Stillwater, the team captured the slag heap’s regrowth in a way that is honest, complex, and distinct to this time and place.

The image doesn’t just set the tone for the festival. It tells a story about living here, confronting complexity, and working towards coexistence.

Bright green woodlands sprout from the top edge of the slag, forming a sharp contrast between the barren black and living green textures. Sibanye Stillwater Mount Lyell Mine Site is honoured to announce the completion of the latest improvement project undertaken on site.

The Mount Lyell Memorial area, located at the entrance to the mine, has received a respectful update and much-needed restoration.

This memorial plaque has long stood in remembrance of those who tragically lost their lives while mining the Prince Lyell Orebody from January 1970 to the present. These were individuals who came to work at Mount Lyell but did not return home to their families and friends. May we continue their memory to be honoured.

We extend our sincere Thanks to Mine-Crete Tasmania and all who contributed to this important project.

In the near future, a brief memorial dedication service will be held at the site. Further details will be shared once confirmed.

Copper Mines of Tasmania are currently undertaking garden upgrades, and the Office Garden was looking a bit drab. Newly planted Huon Pines and Man Ferns were looking a bit bare, until Ian Bradshaw donated 5 Huon Pine logs for the garden adding to the aesthetics. Next spring the garden should be taking off. Watch this space.
Thankyou to Ian & Graeme at Pioneer Traders of Tasmania for your generous donation from the staff at CMT
