💳 UPDATE: ATO CREDIT CARD PAYMENT BAN DELAYED

Some welcome breathing room for Australian businesses!

Following our recent post that the ATO would stop accepting credit card payments from 1 December 2026, the Federal Government has now stepped in to delay this change until 30 June 2027.

Why the change of plans?

The original decision followed new rules banning credit and debit card surcharges from 1 October 2026. The ATO had determined that continuing to accept credit card payments, without passing on the associated processing fees, would be too costly.

However, the announcement prompted significant concerns from small businesses and industry groups, particularly those who rely on credit cards to help manage cash flow and meet their tax obligations.

In response, Treasurer Jim Chalmers has announced additional funding to allow the ATO to continue accepting credit card payments until the end of the financial year.

What does this mean for you?

✅ Credit card payments to the ATO can continue until 30 June 2027.
✅ Businesses have more time to review their payment arrangements.
✅ Further consultation will take place before the next steps are determined.

Importantly, this is a delay, not a permanent reversal of the decision.

We'll continue to keep our clients informed as further details become available.

📢 Important ATO payment update
From 30 November 2026, the ATO will no longer accept credit card payments.
If you currently use a credit card to make payments to the ATO, including payments under an ATO payment plan, you will need to update your payment method before this date.
Other payment methods will still be available, so it’s a good idea to review your arrangements now and make sure an alternative payment method is in place before 30 November.
This change forms part of broader changes to credit card payment fees and surcharging in Australia.
If you’re unsure how this may affect your current ATO payment arrangements, please contact the Sage Wealth Builders team.

How lovely is the Celebrating 150 Years - Blackville Public School cookbook?! Such amazing work has gone into putting this together! The SWB team are so proud to have supported this sweet (and savoury 😜) piece of history!

THANK YOU SAGE WEALTH BUILDERS!

Another special Silver Sponsor thank you today, this time to the lovely Jodie from Sage Wealth Builders.💙💛

It was wonderful to catch up with Jodie and personally thank her for supporting Blackville Public School’s 150th Anniversary celebrations, with a certificate and a copy of our commemorative cookbook, ‘Today’s Cooking with Yesterday’s Memories’.

One of the loveliest parts of organising our 150th has been seeing just how many people and businesses have been willing to get behind our little school. Every contribution has helped us create a celebration worthy of this incredible milestone.

Jodie and Sage Wealth Builders… thank you for being part of our story and helping us celebrate 150 years of Blackville Public School! 💙💛

Put simply, CGT isn’t a separate tax. It’s the income tax you pay on the profit you make when you sell or dispose of an asset.

This includes things like:
🏠 rental properties
📉 shares
💻 crypto assets.

If you dispose of an asset (meaning, you stop owning it) a CGT event may occur. That’s when you’ll need to report a capital gain or capital loss in your tax return.

Capital gain: will increase the tax you need to pay.

Capital loss: can be used to offset other capital gains you make in the future. This will reduce the tax you need to pay, so don’t forget to report these!

GOOD NEWS FOR SMALL BUSINESS: THE $20,000 INSTANT ASSET WRITE-OFF IS NOW PERMANENT

No more waiting each year to see whether the Instant Asset Write-Off will be extended!

The Government has now made the $20,000 Instant Asset Write-Off permanent from 1 July 2026, giving small businesses greater certainty when planning future purchases and investments.

So, what does this mean?
Eligible businesses with a total turnover of less than $10 million that use the simplified depreciation rules can immediately deduct the business portion of eligible assets costing less than $20,000.

And importantly, the $20,000 threshold applies per asset, meaning eligible businesses can claim the write-off for multiple assets during the financial year.

Eligible assets can include both new and second-hand assets, such as tools, equipment, machinery, computers and other items used in your business.

⚠️ A few important points to remember:

• The asset must cost less than $20,000, not $20,000 or less.
• The full cost of the asset must fall below the threshold, even if you only use part of it for business.
• You can only claim the portion relating to business use.
• Assets costing $20,000 or more will generally be added to the small business depreciation pool rather than immediately written off.
• Specific rules and limits can apply to motor vehicles and certain other assets.

And remember, a $20,000 write-off does not mean you receive $20,000 back. It is a tax deduction that reduces your taxable income.

The biggest change here is certainty. Small businesses can now factor the Instant Asset Write-Off into their longer-term planning without wondering whether it will be extended for another financial year.

Thinking about investing in new equipment, machinery, technology or other assets for your business? Speak with the team at Sage Wealth Builders before you buy so we can help you understand how the rules apply to your circumstances.
