This is NOT an article on BUDGETING.

Here we discuss strategies for planning and action in fast changing times.

Traditional budgeting tends to be fixed and works when the business conditions are steady.

Organisations plan in order to achieve outcomes which typically exceed normal standard outcomes. The "how to" factors require learning, adapting and growing and enables adjusting to the changing environment. The Covid pandemic initiated changes in product and service offerings (restaurants making and selling sourdough bread), and WFH meetings with customers via Zoom.

Planning and action succeeds by rolling out of effective changeable strategies. Example - better technology as part of product and service delivery, investments for changes in product - hand sanitisers, public safety in retail / medical centres, staff training, increased online sales and related logistics.

It's okay to change forecasts each month in accordance with the changing conditions. Events like the pandemic are novel so traditional planning is obsolete. Having a "flight plan" provides better certainty for staff which in turn increases the corporate memory with respect to the ability to deal with change and the planning and action required to achieve business outcomes.

The pandemic is making the annual process even more challenging.
