Laminitis Alert: 80% to 90% of all laminitis cases are the result or metabolic issues. If your horse, donkey, pony, or mule has laminitis, assume that your equine has EMS/IR (Equine Metabolic Syndrome/Insulin Resistance) and start him or her on the Emergency Diet right away. Blood tests are also in order. Test glucose and insulin for EMS/IR, and if PPID/Cushing's disease is suspected, test ACTH. Equine metabolic syndrome (EMS) is influenced by both genetic and environmental factors with specific breeds being more susceptible to EMS. However, disease risk can also vary within breeds. In her presentation at the NO Laminitis! Virtual Conference late last year, Elaine Norton DVM, PhD discussed how the Arabian breed can be used to explore the differences in risk factor between different subgroups based on management and genetics.

The proceedings from Dr. Norton's presentation are available here: https://ecirhorse.org/proceedings-2025.php. download is free.

ABOUT DR. NORTON
Elaine Norton, DVM, MS, PhD, DACVIM-LA is an assistant professor in the Animal and Comparative Biomedical Sciences Department and the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Arizona. Her research focuses on improving animal health by reducing the risk of laminitis through precision medicine. Currently, she investigates the interactions between genomic risk factors and environmental influences in equine metabolic syndrome (EMS) to enhance the understanding of its pathophysiology and improve patient management. Dr. Norton's passion for horses began in her childhood, riding dressage. Tragically, she lost her first horse to laminitis, inspiring her lifelong dedication to finding ways to prevent and treat this devastating disease. After not being able to ride for a few decades, Dr. Norton is back in the saddle and finally checking off a bucket list item by learning how to jump.

Conflicting and often inaccurate advice and information about metabolic horses and laminitis is everywhere you look on social media. No wonder caregivers suffer from confusion and lack of success when trying to help the horses in their care!

ECIR can help clear things up for you in our new webinar series launching on Thursday, 4/23/26. with the topic HOW DOES INSULIN CAUSE LAMINITIS? All webinars in the series will include live 30-minute presentations, followed by 30 minutes of Q&A with Eleanor M. Kellon, VMD and ECIR President Kathleen M. Gustafson, PhD. These webinars are designed specifically to give the facts based on our over 25 years of research and in-the-barn work for success with metabolic equines. The cost is $30 and the sessions will be recorded for additional viewing.

REGISTER HERE for all upcoming webinars: https://www.ecirhorse.org/webinars.php.

Additional webinar topics will include:
-NSC or HC โ€“ Why does it Matter?
-PPID and the Seasonal Rise
-Winter Laminitis

ECIR Group Inc. thanks our Diamond Benefactors for supporting this project.

Heading into winter.
Extra blanketโ€™s are on the beds.
Rugs are off horses and they are fresh, running and snorting like nutters in the fog as the sun comes up.
Love this time of year!๐Ÿ’•

And while I sleep, breath and live Seedytoe at present, I thought Iโ€™d take a pic this morning of a perfect example of Seedytoe which had made its way to the top and blew out a nice abscess. ๐ŸŽ†
The Seedytoe had started in this foot possibly years before I first saw the horse and even though we started to resect and treat just prior to the wet season, it had obviously made its way up the wall high enough so once the wet season came was enough to send it into overdrive.

So next time your horse blows an abscess at the coronet, investigate directly under it at the laminar line and see what you find!
This occurance is the most common reason for abscessโ€™s at the coronet!
