World Elder Abuse Day 🙏

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) is a global initiative that highlights the risks and realities of abuse faced by older people. It is a reminder of the importance of working together to build safer, more inclusive communities.

The statistics are staggering: in NSW, over the six years to 30 June 2025, the NSW Ageing and Disability Commission received 19,541 reports about older people. The most common reports of alleged abuse were psychological abuse (39%), financial abuse (30%) and neglect (22%).

Effective responses start with seeing the person behind the situation. Older people experiencing abuse, neglect and exploitation should be seen as a person with rights, preferences, and a voice.

Having a Will, Enduring Power of Attorney and Enduring Guardian in place helps protect your rights, your preferences and your voice. For more information about forward planning documents, visit our website www.nsw.gov.au/makeyourwill

For more information about putting the person at the centre when responding to abuse, neglect, and exploitation, see the ADC Fact Sheethttps://ageingdisabilitycommission.nsw.gov.au/documents/tools-and-resources/for-professionals/adc-person-centred-approaches-factsheet.pdf or visit the ADC websitehttps://ageingdisabilitycommission.nsw.gov.au/documents/tools-and-resources/for-professionals/adc-person-centred-approaches-factsheet.pdf

Every adult should have one prepared just in case. Its important to carefully consider whom should be appointed as your attorney as they will have a wide range of power.
