I was tasked with making a custom hallstand out of "nice timber" for a birthday present.
Since having only built one previously (when I was a 3rd year apprentice) I went back into the archives with plans to somewhat replicate that Edwardian style.
Decided on recycled silky oak, from bits of old doors, wardrobes and beds...
One thing I could not source locally was a nice row of tiles to do it justice.
Luckily (but unfortunately after I'd made provision for the standard size tiles) I stumbled upon a tile manufacturer "TessieRay's Tile Shop" through Zazzle.
Luckily they arrived much earlier than expected and I still had time to fit them before the deadline.
Albeit rectifying (by hand) the edges to fit the slightly smaller size.
The bonus was it deleted the white boarder they came with.
Absolutely stoked with the Art Nouveau style the client decided on, they finish it off perfectly 🙌.

Sneaky short notice wedding present with the customer giving me an idea he had in his head being a giant lock leaving the rest up to me.
I came up with a heart-shaped locket appearing to float above the plinth.
I recreated the escutcheon from an antique lock out of timber and fabricated a steel mounting bracket.
Made from the rail of an old red cedar door and laminated mango wood.
One of my faves.

Something different, had to bust out the ol' spokeshave for this one.
Was commissioned to make a traditional 3m Torres Strait harpoon/spear (wap).
Hand shaped from oregon pine.
2 piece for ease of transport with brass threaded joiner and collar.

Quick hip replacement to a rubberwood chair.
Whilst being quite strong, this type of timber tends to shear off across the grain when it does break.
The trick is to drill far up into the broken piece and insert a dowel made from long grain timber, like oak.

Clear finish to bring out the natural silky oak colour.

Bakelite handles didn't make the cut.
Went through the stash and found some solid brass shells which were darkened to create a nice contrast 👌
