FBA is working with Nghally Ghungalu Thoonieda Aboriginal Corporation as they become nationally accredited fire crew members. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

This certification will support Nghally Ghungalu Thoonieda Aboriginal Corporation to conduct burns across different land tenures, using fire to treat and heal Country.

FBA is supporting greater First Nations involvement in Brigalow management by helping First Nations people in the Fitzroy region build skills and lead long-term, on-ground work.

Weโ€™d like to give a big thank you to Nghally Ghungalu Thoonieda Aboriginal Corporation, Department of Resources, Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, Cawarral Rural Fire Services and Grant Western at Fire Management Training.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us last week for our Yarn for Opportunities morning tea. It was a great chance to connect, share conversations about our work and strengthen regional relationships.

FBA and our First Nations Engagement team look forward to continuing the conversation and building opportunities together.

It's been almost a year since we launched our Slow Down for Koala's campaign! ๐Ÿจ๐Ÿจ

The popular bumper stickers and kids' activity books were shipped out by the 100โ€™s last year to every primary school in the Isaac Region and handed out at many events and businesses who became collection points.

The campaign is still being championed by local libraries who are helping keep the message alive where it matters most in valuable koala habitat.

Isaac Libraries , who have recently re-stocked campaign resources have placed them front and center, making it easier than ever for community members to get involved and show support!

If you are interested in collecting a sticker or a book and canโ€™t make it to a library in the Isaac Region, please contact our team!

A conversation at a sold-out FBA workshop has opened the door to a new opportunity to support central Queensland land managers with their business and landscape goals. ๐ŸŒฑ

Following the workshop, FBA Land Management Officer Sheree Johnston returned to the property that hosted the event for a follow up visit with the land managers.

Sheree was joined by the FBA team to look at the propertyโ€™s brigalow with blackbutt country and assess whether it could be suitable for an initiative focused on improving native woody vegetation across the Fitzroy region.

Discussions on the day included:
โœ… Strategic fencing to allow more controlled and intensive rotational grazing
โœ… Water infrastructure to improve paddock use
โœ… Hydration banks to slow water movement, improve infiltration and help rehydrate the landscape
โœ… Managing grazing pressure so brigalow suckers can establish and persist

If you would like to learn more about how FBA can support you, or if you are interested in a property visit to discuss collaboration opportunities, contact us to start a conversation.

FBA has been working with land managers to restore and protect high-value wetlands through strategic fencing. ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ’ง

By restricting livestock access to wetland systems, creek bank erosion and sediment run-off are reduced, helping prevent sediment from entering downstream wetland and marine systems.

Fencing also allows native species to rest during significant stages of their life cycles, including nesting periods for endangered wetland and migratory birds. Installing water points as part of fencing projects ensures productivity remains steady, reducing cattle stress and walk to water.

Outcomes include:
โœ… Improved water quality through better land management near waterways
โœ… Protection and restoration of sensitive wetland and coastal marine habitats
โœ… Integrated catchment-to-reef management approaches

FBA project officers have been out learning the ropes of EMSA (Ecological Monitoring System Australia). This method gives them a baseline snapshot of species composition and vegetation structure before works begin.

This is the kind of groundwork that makes real impact measurable.

We're proud to be recognised by our partners for the work we're doing across the Fitzroy region.

This award reflects our ongoing work to restore ecosystems, improve soil and water health, and reduce runoff into the Fitzroy River, the largest river system flowing to the Great Barrier Reef.

Each year, through our Stewardship Report, we highlight the incredible work our partners are doing to protect and restore waterway health.

In 2025, at our Annual Water Forum, we were proud to build on this recognition by introducing the Stewardship Recognition Award. This award celebrates projects that demonstrate outstanding leadership and deliver lasting impact across the Basin.

Weโ€™re delighted to congratulate Fitzroy Basin Association (FBA) as the recipient of the 2025 Stewardship Recognition Award. The award was proudly presented by Tim Kendrick to FBAโ€™s Chief Executive Officer, Elyse Riethmuller.

FBAโ€™s large-scale landscape improvement projects are helping to reduce fine sediment runoff and improve water quality flowing to the Great Barrier Reef. Through strong partnerships, innovation, and on-ground action, FBA is tackling erosion at its source, protecting productive land, supporting landholders, and strengthening the resilience of our waterways.
