Wood fibre utilisation is not a slogan to us. It is the entire business.

Australia's plantation forests keep growing and keep supplying, framing an average home every 150 seconds. They will not keep pace. Projected demand for sawn softwood by 2050 runs well ahead of what this country is on track to grow. You can manufacture a product. You can't manufacture a forest.

So, every length cut short on a plant floor comes out of a supply that is already short. Using this resource properly is not a sustainability line. It is arithmetic.

Saws cost a lot of money. Some cost even more.

We support the purchase of a saw. A good linear saw earns its place in a good plant. But buying it does not deliver an automatic advantage.

The thinking goes that cutting everything in house is where the return lives, right down to the webs, creeper chords and blocks cut from higher cost infeed. Here is the question that should come first. Does all of that cutting need to be automated, or could some of it be eliminated?

Plants that supplement keep their core requirements on the saw they invested in, while the smaller componentry arrives production ready. Those cuts still happen, just not on their saw, not on their shift, and not at their cost.

There are two costs in your plant. You’re probably only counting one.

The cost to be able to do it.
The saw itself, the capital and the interest, amortised over every year you own it. The Truss Component Analysis identifies this as your Opportunity Cost.

Ask a frame and truss owner what their scarcest resource is. Very few will say timber.

Timber can be ordered. What can't be ordered is another experienced fabricator. Another reliable saw hand. Another person who understands how a frame goes together.

What are your most capable people doing all day?

In plants that cut in-house, a surprising share of skilled hours goes to work no customer will ever pay for. Docking webs. Cutting blocks and nogs. Moving stock to the saw and offcuts away from it.

Necessary work. But it's preparation, not production.

On paper, buying pre-cut componentry looks like a materials purchase, compared piece by piece against "we can cut that ourselves."

But you're not really buying timber. You already have timber.

You're buying back the hours of the people you can't replace and putting them on the work that earns margin: assembled frames and trusses out the door.
