I’d rather give something 💯% and come up short than never try at all.

I’ve never understood people who say I can’t do that and have never tried.

Back yourself, the plan won’t unfold perfectly and you can count on that. But keep moving forward.

Don’t listen to others opinions, it’s usually them projecting their own fears and insecurities onto you.

If you don’t take the first step you can guarantee you’ll never know.

What have you got to lose?

Going through challenges isn’t new to us, but that doesn’t stop us becoming overwhelmed when we are confronted with new challenges.

We can use reference points from past experiences to assist us to overcome new challenges. These may be very individual or similar to others.

A reference point I often use with people, because almost everyone can relate to it, is learning to drive a car.

It’s a complex skill and the first time we drive a car, usually with someone supervising us, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and make mistakes with so many skills to perform and things to focus on. Usually that first attempt at driving is far from our best.

But in a relatively short period of time (depending on the individual) we become skilled at driving a car to the point that it becomes second nature, almost like learning to walk.

When we apply this to other skills or challenges we can understand that continual work and positive action will increase our competence and help us move through challenges or learn new skills.

In these challenging times it can be easy to get caught up in the noise, what’s not important and lose focus on what we are able to control.

It’s important to understand what we can control as individuals. We have control of what we do, say, think, believe and taking positive action moving forward in the pursuit of our goals.

Where possible we can acknowledge and accept the chaos around us, but maintaining focus on what we can control helps us avoid being drawn in and overwhelmed by chaos and it’s distractions.

You may have a very solid plan, but often even the best plan is impacted by the chaos created during challenging times. It is okay when our plan takes a hit, this provides an opportunity to find another way to get done what it is that you need to do.

Find your alternate path and move forward, the chaos will still be there while you’re still getting after your goals.

Are your expectations aligned?

As the pandemic continues and brings with it continual change, there has been much discussion about employees being trusted to deliver while working from home.

The most important principle of team performance is trust.

If you’re a leader, does the uncertainty of the pandemic have you doubting your team because of the unusual working arrangements many are forced to endure.

If there is uncertainty it may be time to check that expectations have been communicated clearly and understood at all levels.

Remember your team don’t have the same availability of peers, leaders and potentially other resources. Problem solving may now be more difficult not being able to get to the workplace.

is critical and it may be time to check and realign with your .

Maintain Focus.

There are so many unknowns at the moment, which can affect our ability to remain focused. So how can we re-focus?

Remove unneeded/wanted distractions, this maybe media, peoples chatter, etc.

The write down explicitly what it is you want to do and create a plan (keep it simple), breaking it down into manageable parts. Identify failure points and come up with solutions, unknown failure points will come up but will be easier to deal with because everything else is planned.

Then prioritise what you need to do and begin working on each manageable part.

Trust in your capabilities and understand and accept that things WILL not alway go to plan!

Slow yourself down..deliberately (take a breathe if need be) if you get overwhelmed.. problem solve and keep taking purposeful action.

If you get distracted go back to your plan. Revisit the plan frequently (set a time daily/weekly)to remain focused.

Coping during COVID-19 2:

Get some perspective. With the rapidly changing world we now live in, take a moment to appreciate the little things or the things you maybe have taken for granted before and be grateful.

It could be a lot worse, but focusing on it will ensure it is.

5 tips for throving during COVID-19:

1. Breathe - you have control of how you react to a continually changing situation, adapt and overcome.
2. Insert fact to overcome fiction - stick to the facts.
3. Think outside the square - Be solution focused. Why can some do it and others can’t? Approach and attitude.
4. Lean on your team - engage with your team and get new ways of doing what you do and celebrate the wins.
5. Communicate - Keep it simple, explicit and concise.
