Here's one that stings a little: since 1 November 2023, your empty wine bottles have been worth 10c each. Every single one.

If you've been popping them straight in the recycling bin for the last couple of years, you're not alone, most people had no idea. Glass wine and spirit bottles from 150ml to 3L all count, and no barcode required.

Here's how it works. A local North Brisbane school filled a single bin with around 1,200 containers. We placed that bin on campus, handled the pickup, and sent the refund straight back to the school.

That's the School Program. We set it up for you, so the school doesn't have to build it from scratch.

Reckon that pile of cans in the garage is worth much? One local family guessed about $8 after winter.

We counted 340 containers. That's $34 in cash, paid on the spot.

Winter in Brisbane means more time indoors and more drinks, so the containers pile up in the garage faster than you'd think. Most people are surprised by how much they've actually got once they bring the bag in.

We love a good sausage sizzle as much as any North Brisbane family, and a container drive has a few things going for it too.

You didn't think you drank that much. Then you counted.

It's easy to underestimate how quickly containers add up. A family of four having dinner three nights a week easily clears 60 cans a month without thinking about it. That's $6 sitting in the recycling bin. Add one BBQ weekend and there's another 40.

We had one North Brisbane household bring in 911 cans, 475 plastic bottles and 172 glass bottles in a single visit. That's $155.80 on one receipt. They said it "just built up in the garage."
