This Scarborough home had old, worn blinds that were letting light spill in around the edges. Ordinary flyscreens are built to keep bugs out, they're not built to hold a child's weight.

For homes with windows above ground level, especially units and multi-level houses, fall prevention screens are the safer alternative to standard flyscreens or window restrictors. They're tested to AS 5203:2016, the national standard covering openable window protection and fall prevention, and align with the "Kids Don't Fly" building guidance many Queensland homes and apartments now need to meet. Unlike bulky window locks that limit how far a window opens, a compliant screen lets the window open fully while still holding firm.

The mesh itself does the work. A fine, strong weave (often 316 marine-grade stainless steel) that's tough enough to act as a barrier but fine enough that airflow, light, and the view aren't affected. Not all screens are security screens.

A flyscreen keeps bugs out. That's it, a thin mesh in a light frame, easy to push through or cut with scissors. A genuine security screen is a completely different product: mesh, frame and lock tested together as one system and rated against Australian Standards to resist forced entry.

What actually makes a screen "security rated" comes down to the testing and certification behind it, not how solid it feels or looks. The only way to know for sure is the compliance rating on the product itself.

Every opening on this Caboolture home got sorted in one go — doors, windows, and the front entry lock.

IntrudaGuard sliding security doors and window screens went in right through the house, all in Monument. The front door got the Yale Unity Smart Lock with a tap via the app or key card, and the screen door opens, no key fumbling. Three sliding doors open onto this Woody Point balcony, right on the water. Now all three are locked down without losing an inch of that view.
