Notice your shoulders creeping forward after a few hours at your desk?

This simple shoulder reset is an easy way to check in with your posture, open up through the chest and give those tight shoulders a little movement during the day.

Small resets like this can make a big difference to how you feel after hours of sitting.

What do tight muscles around your hips have to do with your lower back? Quite a bit, actually.

John from Active4Life explains how tightness through the front of the body can pull the pelvis forward, which can then exaggerate the natural curve through the lumbar spine.

It’s a great example of how one change in the way we hold our body can influence another area entirely.

Another reason why good sitting support is about more than simply “sitting up straight”.

Here’s one part of desk posture you might not have thought about. Your calf muscles!

John from Active4Life explains that when your chair is too high and you’re sitting with your feet on your toes rather than properly supported, your calf muscles are held in a shortened position.

Over time, those muscles can become increasingly tight, which is why regular movement and calf stretching are worth remembering too.

And of course, having somewhere comfortable to support your feet means you don’t need to spend the workday balancing on your tippy toes in the first place. 😉

Sitting at a desk all day? Your body probably doesn’t need a huge intervention. Sometimes it just needs a quick reset.

John from Active4Life recommends breaking up your workday by getting up, walking around or grabbing a glass of water before coming back and resetting your sitting position.

When you sit back down, maintaining the natural curve through your lower back and giving your feet somewhere comfortable to rest can help support a better sitting position.

And yes… this is where a good footrest comes in handy. 😉

Long flights can mean hours of sitting with very little opportunity to move.

John from Active4Life shares some simple ways to keep your body moving even when you’re confined to your seat, including small seated exercises you can do without needing much space.

And when it’s safe and you’re able to, getting up and moving around the cabin can help break up those long periods of sitting too.

A few small movements can be much better than sitting completely still for hours at a time. ✈️

We often think about foot support for adults sitting at a desk, but what about kids?

John from Active4Life explains why it can be particularly important for developing children to have their feet resting against something solid when they’re sitting.

That support provides proprioceptive feedback to the body and means their feet aren’t simply left dangling when the chair is too high.

Whether it’s a footrest, a box or, as John remembers, a good old stack of Yellow Pages, giving kids somewhere to rest their feet can make a difference.

Poor posture isn’t just about how you look sitting at your desk.

John from Active4Life explains how staying in the same posture for long periods can create muscle imbalances. Some muscle groups become tight and overworked, while others can become weaker.

Using rounded shoulders and a forward “poked chin” posture as an example, he shows exactly what can be happening through the neck and upper body.

A great little reminder that supporting your body properly while you sit really does matter.

Everyone has a story behind how they ended up where they are today.

We sat down with John from Active4Life to hear a little about his professional journey, from university, to 7 years working as a physiotherapist in the Army, into the disability sector and eventually private practice.

It was great getting to know a little more about the experience behind the physio. 😊

Keep an eye out for more from our chat with John!
