A statement we hear often is "The hospital said Mum needs 24 hour care." Panic sets in as the choice is weighed up....24 hour care or nursing home. 𝘎𝘶𝘭𝘱.

Sometimes that's true. And of course, we're here to help.

Quite often, though, 24-hour care might be needed immediately after leaving hospital. But as they recover, the level of support can often be reduced.

Older people recover more slowly. We get it.

So it might mean 24-hour care for a short time, followed by run of long days, then 6 hours, then 4 as confidence and independence return.

Care should respond to the person, not locked in based on a prediction made on the day they left hospital.

One of the biggest misconceptions about staying out of aged care is that it's all or nothing.

Families often tell us, "We're not ready for 24-hour care."

Our response is usually, "Who said you needed it?"

Some of our clients at Acquaint continue living safely and happily at home with just 4-6 hours of support each day. Enough time to help with personal care, meals, appointments, exercise, medication prompts and a few fabulous jobs around the house.

The rest of the day remains exactly that. Their day.

Sometimes a small amount of well-planned support is all that's needed to keep life at home working beautifully.

Sometimes the nicest messages we receive from families isn't about the care itself. It's the "Thanks. I could finally concentrate on my meeting."

When you're responsible for an ageing parent, distance has a way of following you. Across the country, world, into every boardroom and every hotel room.

Knowing there's a great team looking after things at home doesn't solve every problem.

But it means you're no longer trying to manage a parent from 30,000 feet.

Here's a simple test.

When you call your home care provider, does the person answering the phone know who you are?

Or do you start again 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘭𝘦 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦?

For us at Acquaint, that's not a minor detail. It's part of our service.

The same applies to the people coming into your home. Familiar faces matter. They notice when something has changed. They know how you like your tea. They know the dog (even I know the dog). They know when to have a chat and when to give you some space.

That's what families remember.

Not the fancy brochure.

There's a tendency to think that more care automatically means better care.

It doesn't.

The right care is the amount that keeps someone safe, well supported and living the life they want.

For some people, that's 24-hour care.

For others, four to six hours a day makes all the difference.

One size has never been a particularly good model for something as personal as ageing.

With The Devil Wears Prada 2 officially here, it felt like an appropriate moment to reflect.

Not on fashion, of course – we’re well across that. But on standards.

Because while the rest of the world may be brushing up on the film’s finest lines, our clients have been living by a similar code to her for quite some time now: things done properly, promptly and without unnecessary fuss.

So, naturally, a few quotes from the film felt… familiar to us. Here are the ones that stood out.

Premium chocolate. Premium seats. Premium sausages, for heaven’s sake.

It seems every product and service has decided it deserves the label. But when families start looking for care at home, the word suddenly carries a little more weight.

But what does it mean in this context, exactly? We’re answering a few of the questions families wonder about.

Wondering what a day with Acquaint might look like? Here's a snippet from the day in the life of one of our clients. And what a day it was!

0900 I went upstairs and stripped ###'s and carers bed linen and into the wash, wiped down kitchen counters and light switches. Completed a big vacuum in all areas.
0930 ### getting ready for the morning so I attended to watering the plants in front and back yard and hung wet linen out to dry.
1130 we took a big walk up to [place] to visit one of ###'s childhood friends, ###'s mobility during this walk was fantastic and he states that his new orthotic shoes are great.
I gave some privacy for ### during his visit.
1310 back home and I prepared lunch for ### - all consumed! Encouraged ### to sit and have a glass of water- effective.
Watered more plants while ### had his lunch and some phone calls and got rid of some obvious cobwebs!
1600hrs- together we started polishing all silverware cutlery - ### stated that he likes Mozart music so I put it on Spotify for him for some background noise- he was very pleased!
1700 ### put on the antique roadshow and had a sleep on the couch watching the news. I finished off the polishing and started preparing dinner at 1830.
### had a beef pie with roasted potatoes and peas. Consumed all with a glass of wine. After dinner I got all the washing off the line and re made ### and carers bed with clean linen. Finished off all dishes for the night. ### in bed by 2200hrs. ### slept well during the night.
