𝟭𝟬 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗡𝗣𝗦 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴

Clarel Paul joined us in 2016 as an Electronics Technician. It didn’t take long for everyone to realise just how much he knew about alarms, CCTV and electronic security systems.

That expertise eventually saw Clarel step into the role of Electronic Security Manager.

Today, he leads our electronic security team and mentors the technicians working alongside him, sharing the knowledge he’s built over many years in the industry.

But technical knowledge is only part of the reason Clarel has made such an impression at NPS.

Ask our clients about him and the feedback is consistently positive. Clarel has a way with people. He’s knowledgeable, dependable and professional, but there’s usually a smile and that unmistakable laugh somewhere in the conversation too. It’s something our clients appreciate, and so do we.

Ten years is a significant milestone, and Glenn Saunders, our Operations Manager, was very pleased to present Clarel with his 10-Year Service Award.

NPS mobile surveillance units are solar powered, self-contained and can be deployed where they’re needed, from construction sites and vacant properties to storage yards and temporary facilities. They connect directly to our monitoring centre, where alerts can be verified and the appropriate response organised when required.

And as the site changes, the unit can move with it. Practical security, without the need for permanent infrastructure.

He moved into mobile patrols not long after, where he set the example for how patrols should be done. That saw him progress to Senior Patrol Officer, taking responsibility for training and supporting new patrol team members.

Today, James is our Protective Services Manager, responsible for our security workforce and the day-to-day relationships with clients across the business. If you've dealt with NPS on the operations side, there's a good chance you've dealt with James.

Ask around the office what makes him good at the job and you hear the same answer every time: he does what he says he'll do, and he's built real relationships with the people he works alongside. Which, when you think about it, says a lot about what good security service comes down to.

Fifteen years is a long time in this industry. People stay when the work means something and they're treated as professionals, not as a number on a roster. James is a reminder of why that matters to us.

For employees dealing directly with customers, clients or members of the public, aggression and violence can also be a workplace risk.

WorkSafe Victoria's current guidance includes CCTV, access control, duress and alarm systems, improved visibility and onsite security among the measures organisations can consider when managing these risks.

But having the technology in place is only part of the picture.

If a duress alarm is activated, who receives it? If CCTV shows an incident developing, is anyone monitoring it? Can access to an area be restricted? Who responds?

𝐓𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐑 𝐔 𝐎𝐊? 𝐃𝐚𝐲.

Security work isn't a 9-to-5 job. Our officers work overnight shifts, weekends, and public holidays. They manage confrontations, respond to incidents, and spend long stretches working alone. That takes a toll, and our industry doesn't talk about it enough.

At NPS, we take officer wellbeing seriously because it directly affects the quality of security we deliver. Fatigued, isolated, or unsupported officers don't perform at their best, and the people they protect deserve better than that.

Checking in on your team isn't a once-a-year event. It's an operational responsibility. We build it into how we manage rosters, how we debrief after incidents, and how our supervisors communicate with officers on site.

If you work in security and you're doing it tough, talk to someone. If you manage a security team, ask the question.

These are people who stay calm when a situation’s unfolding and know exactly what to do when it counts.

But ask them to “just look natural” for a camera, though, and it’s sometimes a different story.

We got a few of the team together for a photo shoot the other week. There was some good-natured banter about angles and "my best side", a few takes lost to laughing, and a genuinely great day spent together focused on capturing the NPS spirit on film.

It’s easy to forget from the outside that the people you rely on when something goes wrong are also just a good crew to be around.

Steady when it matters. Good company the rest of the time.

A site may experience more theft, aggressive behaviour or incidents at particular times of day, while its security arrangements remain largely unchanged.

The recent expansion of Victoria Police's Operation Pulse is a useful prompt for retailers and property managers to look at their own sites.

Where are incidents occurring? When are they happening? Are current security measures providing enough visibility and an appropriate response when something happens?
