Too often, humanitarian research, funding, and decisions are shaped externally, leaving out the voices closest to crisis. Shifting this is critical.

We’re excited to launch ALLIES, our new research initiative under the Humanitarian Horizons program, supported by the Broad Reach Foundation, and delivered in partnership with CoLAB, GLOW Consultants, NSDation, Insights, Humanitarian Solutions Hub, and the Centre.

How has power between international NGOs and local NGOs partners shifted?

“Power in partnerships is not something we typically in the past have been overt about and addressed head on… whereas now there is more emphasis on localisation and shifting power in partnerships” - Sarah Doyle

Our latest episode of I Think You’re On Mute explores how humanitarian response in Vanuatu has shifted and what can be done to sustain localisation.

Johnson Simon Mahitmaur from the NGO desk office at the Ministry of Home Affairs in Vanuatu came on the podcast and spoke about how international NGOs can best work with government and local organisations.

“It's very, very important, especially during disasters or blong, that we involve the NGOs because we are all targeting the same community and all targeting the same people. And that's why we don't want to lead on all the projects, we want to involve everyone together.”

Local communities and local leaders know what they need when it comes to humanitarian response, but they need the trust – and investment – of international organisations.

“…the community have to be trusted that they know what they're doing, and they can make the change that they know based on their realities” - Emeline Siale Ilolahia, PIANGO Pacific 2030.

The new episode of I Think You’re On Mute looks at how international actors can shift the power and support locally led humanitarian response in Vanuatu.

Pamela Combinido-Elfa: Can you share what needs to change in the way funding flows across the local partners?

Emeline Siale Ilolahia: “The home of any partnership or any funding access has to be based on trust. And then from there you embrace whatever level of capacity they are, and then you invest in the process of the fund or the project, help them to be better in what they do.”
