Getting help quickly matters in an emergency.

When you call Triple Zero (000) from a mobile phone, your device will first try to connect using your network.

If that's not available, it may automatically connect to another available mobile network. This is known as emergency camp-on.

You don't need to change any settings or do anything yourself. It works automatically and at no cost to you, even without an active SIM in your phone.

If your call doesn't connect within around five seconds, hang up and try again immediately.

If it still doesn't seem to be connecting, call 000 again and stay on the line for up to 60 seconds while your phone attempts to connect to another network. The line may be silent while this happens.

Important information about the upcoming national AusAlert test 📢

On Monday 27 July 2026, Australia will conduct a national test of AusAlert, a new emergency warning system designed to help keep communities informed during emergencies and disasters.

The test alert will be sent to compatible mobile devices and is expected to vibrate and play a warning sound for about 10 seconds, even if a device is set to silent or "Do Not Disturb".

For people who keep a hidden phone for personal safety reasons, it's important to be aware of this test. The alert may sound on compatible devices regardless of silent settings or if "Do Not Disturb" settings are switched on. Knowing this ahead of time may help you make any arrangements needed to keep yourself safe.

If receiving the alert could affect your safety, the Australian Government advises that to avoid receiving the test alert, you should switch the device off or place it in airplane mode before the scheduled test time. Leave the device off or in airplane mode for at least one hour after the scheduled test time.

📅 National test times – Monday 27 July 2026
• Eastern Australia (ACT, NSW, QLD, TAS and VIC): 2:00pm AEST
• Central Australia (NT and SA, including Broken Hill): 1:30pm ACST
• Western Australia: 12:00pm AWST
