Before harvest begins, an enormous amount of time goes into preparing the machinery: servicing equipment, completing repairs and checking systems.

But preparing for a busy season also means getting the people ready.

Monk and Son Ag services are one of Australia's largest silage contracting business - and they are quickly heading into their peak work period. This requires plenty of planning to ensure smooth operations for their business, machinery and people!

Enter Rural People Co... we were asked to be part of their 2026 pre-harvest briefing. With more than 100 people scattered around one of their huge machinery sheds, it was an opportunity to reinforce the safety, communication and shared standards needed for the season ahead.

The team heard from local police officer Sam Alexander about road safety and responsible driving, HR Manager Ben about new technology supporting safety and logistics, and owner Sam Monk with a business update.

Adam Jenkins facilitated a practical session on good communication, workplace standards and everyday leadership. He also introduced HBDI® thinking preferences and the Iceberg Model, encouraging the team to consider different perspectives and what may be happening beneath the surface.

“Harvest doesn’t run on machines alone. It runs on people.”

It was great to see Monk and Son Ag services investing in the people side of harvest preparation, because safe, successful seasons are built on safety, good communication and strong team culture.

Thanks for having Rural People Co involved. We wish the entire crew a safe and successful harvest.

How do you value your investment in your team?

This week I had the privilege of facilitating another 2IC/Managers Course in Kiama, NSW.

One thing continues to stand out: farm businesses that intentionally invest in developing their people consistently put themselves in a stronger position for the future.

We readily invest in livestock, machinery and infrastructure because we see them as assets. People deserve to be viewed the same way. Developing capability, confidence and leadership isn't a cost—it's an investment that pays dividends through better businesses, stronger teams and healthier rural communities.

A big thank you to the participants for embracing the opportunity to invest in themselves. It's always
rewarding to see the growth that can happen in just a few days. Thanks Tania (Dairy NSW) for a fantastic few days!
