Every great city has a moment where someone dares to imagine something bigger.

For the Gold Coast, that moment began with a belief. A belief that this city could become something far beyond its beaches, its tourism and its construction boom. That world-class health, research, education and innovation could find a home here and change what the Gold Coast means to the world.🌏

What followed was 25 years of vision, courage and quiet determination. ✨

In this chapter of our anniversary series, visionaries Di Dixon, Bryan Case, and Ned Pankhurst take us back to where it all began. The ideas, the risks, the belief in a city that was ready for more.

And introducing their story is someone who has had a front row seat to all of it. 25 years ago, Kathy Kruger was a young journalist reporting on that very vision. Today, she remains part of the team delivering it.

This is one of the stories shaping 25 years of the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct, with more to come across the year.

More than 26 years ago, before the vision for the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct officially took shape, an ambitious research vision was already beginning on the Gold Coast.

Featuring Distinguished Professor Mark von Itzstein AO FAA FAHMS FRACI and Dr Chris Davis, this story explores the origins of the Institute for Glycomics (now the Griffith University Institute for Biomedicine and Glycomics) and the vision that helped place the Gold Coast on the global biomedical research map.

Following the discovery of the influenza drug Relenza, Professor Mark von Itzstein saw an opportunity, and what followed was the growth of internationally recognised biomedical research capability, helping drive discoveries, partnerships and technologies designed to improve lives around the world.

This is just one of the stories shaping 25 years of the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct, with more to be shared across the year.

A strong step forward for sports innovation on the Gold Coast 💪

Griffith's new High Performance Hub is more than just a gym, it’s a space where elite athletes, sport science and health research come together to push performance to the next level.

With 2032 on the horizon, it’s exciting to see this kind of capability continuing to grow right here in the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct.

For more than 60,000 years, knowledge, healing and care have existed on this land.

Featuring Uncle John Graham and Cindy Shannon AM, this story recognises the Kombumerri people of the Yugambeh language region and reflects on how that legacy continues today through the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct.

It’s a reminder that what we’re building is grounded in something much older. Connection, shared knowledge and responsibility to community.

Something powerful happens when a room full of people choose to lift others as they grow. 💜

This week, the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct community came together to celebrate International Women’s Day.

Researchers, clinicians, innovators, students, staff and community leaders gathered to reflect on this year’s theme:

Give More Than You Take – Stories, Legacy and the Power of Place.

We heard incredible insights from our speakers about mentorship, leadership, lived experience and the people who shaped their journeys.

But what made the evening truly special was what happened beyond the stage.

New connections were formed.
Stories were shared.
Advice was passed on.

As we mark 25 years since the vision for the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct was first established, moments like this remind us that the real strength of this place is the community behind it.

A huge thank you to our wonderful speakers who brought the evening to life:

Professor Evelin Tiralongo
Dr Shabnam Gujadhur
Georgia Wyllie
Dren Xërxa
Rachel Bastin
Tina O'Keefe
Cr Brooke Patterson

And thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to our Legacy Wall, sharing wisdom for the next generation.

If you would still like to add your reflection, you can do so here:

How will you give more than you take?

📸 Thank you to members of our precinct community who shared their photos from the evening.

This year marks 25 years since the original vision for the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct was established.

A vision built on people sharing knowledge, backing each other and creating opportunities that last beyond themselves.

That’s why this year’s International Women’s Day theme is:
Give More Than You Take
Stories, Legacy and the Power of Place

Because progress rarely happens alone.

It happens when someone shares advice earlier than expected.
When knowledge is passed on.
When people choose to leave things better than they found them.

As part of this year’s celebration, we’re building a living Legacy Wall, capturing lessons, reflections and wisdom from across our community.
