Think strength training is just for young Adonis wannabes? 💪 Age isn’t an excuse - it’s the reason!
Resistance training - lifting weights, using resistance bands, and bodyweight exercises (including carrying the shopping like a champion) stimulate growth hormone and IGF‑1, helping muscles, bones, and even the collagen in your skin (hello, crow’s feet prevention).

Bonus: it promotes neurogenesis, keeping your brain sharp while your posture stays upright.
For the middle-aged, it helps fight aches, metabolism slowdown, and posture slump. Older adults reduce fall risk, maintain bone density, and preserve independence.

Strong cores and functional moves make daily life safer, smoother, and more self-assured for everyone.

Physio guidance keeps it safe and tailored - because even Adonis could use a plan. 😏
Call 9330 1212 to make an appointment with one of our physios at St Leonards Physiotherapy for tailored advice to get stronger and sprightlier at any age (while doing it safely!).

Proprioception is your body quietly telling your brain, “I’ve got this, trust me.” 🧠
The word comes from Latin proprius, meaning “one’s own,” and capere, meaning “to grasp.” Together, it literally means “to grasp one’s own.” In other words, your body is constantly checking in, letting your brain know where your limbs are and how they’re moving - without you watching.
After an injury, proprioception can falter. Muscles, tendons, and joints may not communicate as clearly, making balance wobbly and movements less precise. Physiotherapy retrains these internal sensors with balance exercises, wobble boards, and targeted movement drills, helping you move safely, reduce re-injury risk, and regain confidence.
Try a mini test: stand on one leg with your eyes closed. That subtle sway? Your proprioception at work.
Call 9330 1212 if you’d like to work on sharpening your body’s internal GPS.

Slow and steady wins the race… but sometimes you need to sprint for the last Tim Tam. 🍫🏃
Your muscles contain different fibre types, each with their own job.

Type I fibres, often called slow-twitch fibres, support endurance. They contract slowly and resist fatigue. You rely on them when you walk the dog, carry the shopping, or stubbornly hold a suitcase that you’re too stubborn to admit is too heavy.

Type II fibres, known as fast-twitch fibres, create quick bursts of force. They help you react fast. Think catching yourself when you slip, stepping quickly off a curb, or making a last-second dash for the final Tim Tam in the staff room. ⚡

In physiotherapy, exercises can challenge these fibres in different ways. Longer, lower-load work builds endurance. Faster, more powerful movements train speed and force.

Because life sometimes needs patience… and sometimes it needs excellent Tim Tam reflexes. 🍫

Your calves do more work than you think. Every step, every climb, every run. 🦵

Exercise of the month: Standing calf raises
Rise onto your toes, pause briefly at the top, then lower slowly.
Behind this small movement are two hard-working muscles: the gastrocnemius and the soleus. Together they power push-off when you walk, help stabilise the ankle, and absorb force with every step.

That slow lowering phase is where the magic happens. It loads the Achilles tendon and the plantar fascia – the strong band of tissue under your foot. Controlled loading helps these tissues adapt, which is why calf raises (often performed off a stair) commonly appear in rehabilitation programs for plantar fasciitis.

Simple exercise. Clever biomechanics.
Do calf raises already feature in your workouts?
Drop a 👍 if they do, or a 👣 if you might give them a try.

Getting back to sport is exciting… but it should not be rushed. 🏃‍♀️

After an injury, your body needs a structured return-to-sport progression. Physiotherapists use clear milestones to rebuild strength, movement control, and confidence safely.

The first stage focuses on restoring strength and joint control. Muscles, tendons, and ligaments need time to tolerate load again, especially after a period of reduced activity. 💪

Next comes agility and change-of-direction training. These drills retrain coordination, balance, and reaction speed - all the things your body relies on when the pace of a game suddenly increases.
Finally, we introduce sport-specific drills that mirror the movements and intensity of your sport. This stage prepares your body for the real demands of competition. ⚽🏀🎾

Each step allows your tissues to adapt and helps reduce the risk of re-injury. Skipping stages may feel quicker, but it often leads to frustrating setbacks.

If you are eager to get back to training but are unsure whether your body is ready, our physiotherapists can guide you through a safe return-to-sport progression.

Pain is not just about tissues - it also involves the nervous system. 🧠

Your body has specialised sensors called nociceptors. These receptors detect potential threats such as pressure, inflammation, or extreme temperatures. Signals travel through the spinal cord to the brain, where the brain decides whether to create the experience of pain.

This system is designed to protect you. Touch something hot and you immediately pull your hand away 👍 - a fast, helpful response.

But sometimes the system becomes a little overprotective. After injury or ongoing stress, the nervous system can remain more sensitive than usual.

This means pain does not always equal damage. The tricky part is that it can be hard to tell the difference.

If you are living with ongoing pain and cannot find a clear cause, our physiotherapists can help you better understand what may be driving it.
